Will indentured servitude come back?

Quote from Eliot Hosewater:

I am all for it. Let's start with the people who are the biggest debtors. Let's get the list of TARP recipients, and might as well add Paulson, Geithner, toss in Greenspan and Bernanke for good measure.

Who else?

haha, you would only be able to throw them in for NOT paying. As long as people made payments, they are fine. (you didnt think it would be that easy did ya?) :)

It's not like they are using their own money.

If we only allowed land holders to vote, we wouldn't have these problems.

On the contrary, people with least ownership are the ones who vote, do you think any of those billionaires stand in the line and actually vote. Most who make more than 200K generally vote much less than people who make considerably less.

You mean corporations. Evil, ruthless, well funded.. Yeah, great idea...

Strangely enough, interesting point.
I get tired of hearing renters complain about high taxes and low services.

Some people here have a very high value of money $$...

clever that u didn't say $US but on the on other hand u may be one of these americans who doesn't think there is any other kind of dollar.

Only the elite wealthy are not in servitude in america.
America was built upon the ideal of servitude, but because people were permitted to take the minor decisions for themselves ( where to live, what to drive, what to eat), over time and with the help of credit and TV, the silly buggers actually came to believe that they were in charge of their own lives.
What a ridiculous notion to hold.
Sadly, now as reality is slooowly dawning, people are becoming confused and frightened.

When I say confused, take health care as just one example.

An obese/ overweight person (most of america) cannot see that what is being discussed is very overpriced and most often, unnecessary, disease management.
A rational person would see that health care is all about good diet, good thoughts and good exercise.

If you cannot rationally take charge of your own life then by default you allow someone else to take charge of it for you.

Quote from peilthetraveler:

Here is the thing. So many people are walking away from their houses. So many people are filing for bankruptcy. People are just not paying their credit cards, their car payments, ect. How long...or should I say how many people have to do this before the government says "Hey, you cant ALL just walk away from your debts!"

These people they cant just throw in jail because the jails are already underfunded and overcrowded. They are already releasing prisoners because they cant support them. So if a man knows the government will not throw him in jail for his lack of debt payment because the jails are too full/underfunded, why would he pay his debt? Well, i think the government would have to produce labor camps. Make the debtors pay their debts in these camps. They would be paid a fair wage, BUT...the government would overcharge them for housing/feeding these people which would make their real wage very low and thus take a long time to pay off the debt. The government would justify it by saying these people need to learn a lesson about paying your debt. The government would also get our manufacturing up by forcing these people to do labor and the labor that these people do would fund the labor camps (basically prisons) they are in. Only difference is that there would be no murderers/rapists/violent offenders in these camps.

How many people will need to walk away from their debt before this happens? Surely the government will not let EVERYONE walk away.

aren't we already doing this to the third world through third world debt. nothing is changing it is just happening on a larger level.

what you should be questioning is why people are doing it.
