That's not how things happen in reality. Assuming a painter's mask is not a proper one that can filter fumes (molecular) the painter's mask is of similar material to a medical mask. The same as when you rub a balloon on your arm and it charges it, the triboelectric effect its called happens in the mask fibers. Particles are drawn to them so the mask does not need to be as fine as you say.
