if the 2nd amendment was intended to limit power of the state over masses, it has done a rather lousy job. imho, over the past century or so the level of control exerted by the american state over its citizens has risen meaningfully.
my suspicion is that the sense of security created by allowing people to own guns has made many men impotent and complacent.
the last thing the state wants is for you to lose that feeling of security.
The law enforcement officers I’ve talked to are pro-personal responsibility and pro-public gun ownership. Law officer opinions should be given great weight because they are on the streets and deal with dangerous real life situations frequently.
The Leftist media vilification of law enforcement officers over criminals only validates these views.

The NRA was once a organization that promoted gun safety and responsible ownership. Really a benevolent organization.
After the civil war, during reconstruction, nra members from NY (because it was actually founded by northerners) went into the south and taught the former enslaved people how to responsibly handle guns so they can protect themselves from lynchings.
Then in the 1970s there was a revolution at the convention in Cincinnati over extremist views. The right wing extremists took over the organization and moved it from responsiblity and safety to ideology and politics.
This is the nra today. Similar to the Republican Party it masquerades itself on the history of its founding northern states but promotes radical right wing extremist policies.
Now the Republican Party isn’t evil, but the NRA is. While the Republican Party bends to lobbyists, the nra forces their agenda on the Republican Party with all the money they get from gun makers.

Democrats have a long losing streak against the NRA and are butthurt about it. Now they are trying the same approach they have used on Trump. Make wild, irresponsible allegations that are amplified by their media allies. Make full use of baby seals like the Parkland crisis actors. Viciously attack anyone who demurs, eg Laura Ingraham, and try to destroy them.
The NRA is a membership organization. Members elect the Board in open elections, unlike the shady leftwing/soros groups like SPLC and Media Matters. The views of the NRA accurately reflect the membership's views. Attacking them as a mouthpiece for the gun manufacturers is just a dodge to try to avoid the fact that what you really despise is the membership.
Which is why Leftist propaganda targets the youth... just as Nazi Goebbles advocated.
Unfortunately, our high schools and colleges have become festering pools of Leftist propaganda and indoctrination....not to mention mainstream and social media.
