Why the World Needs Fewer Cops

The tragedy in Ferguson, Mo., highlights how predatory policing has reduced trust in law enforcement in many parts of the U.S. Court fines (mostly connected with traffic violations) are worth 20 percent of Ferguson’s general-fund revenue. That’s considerably more than property tax revenue and about two-thirds sales tax revenue. The police force accounts for 41 percent of the city’s expenses, suggesting fines are worth about one-half of the police budget. The incentives that such a system created to fine people overzealously were one factor behind the dismal state of relations between locals and cops in the city even before the death of Michael Brown.

The above is excerpted from Bloomberg Business week. The entire article may be read here: http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2014-12-01/why-the-world-needs-fewer-cops#r=rss

Note this is an issue apart from the Michael Brown issue.

I like how they say this is an issue apart from the Michael Brown one, but how the tragedy in Ferguson highlights predatory policing.

There are lots of arguments that can be made to reign in law enforcement, but I have a hard time giving credibility to an article that claims Ferguson's "tragedy" is proof of it.

I guess we'll take what we can get on this.

Don't expect any of the righties to actually read it. ;)

Prior State Police here. You can thank your pals in the Nazicrats movement for this. They've decimated values and common sense. What else do you expect from that? You want cops to be like I was and call people Sir/Mam, and ONLY arrest if I absolutely have to? If so, you've got some work to do. Afterall, these cops come from the same generation as the rest of the screw you, all me types... Yeah this is the result. It's gonna get worse too. :(
And thanks for voting for the Nazis, btw. The dems love empowering local police with excessive powers, and I could give examples for pages...

Piezoe's grasping at straws.

I read it, prancer. It was a good article, and I agree with most of it. I just don't like that they start out with a "tragedy in Ferguson" that drew them to look into it. The wrongful confiscation of property (usually money) has been pointed out numerous times here by "righties" and you "lefties" haven't said shit about it. Why? Because there's no racial discussion in it. All of a sudden, you add race (Ferguson) and it's interesting to you.

Lucrum ran a "Cops Gone Wild" thread for well over a year. Where is all your outrage on that thread?

therefore as a keynesian piezoe should agree we should supply fewer laws smaller govt and and sealed borders

Oh damn!!!!! That's the best reply to piezoe I've ever seen! Just wow!!!!

Well, here's the problem with this leftist argument. This forum is a perfect example of people, conservative and libertarian type people that have a real issue with the militarization and over reach of police across the nation. There are hundreds if not thousands of posts along those lines. The conclusion, none of us want a police state. Then several hundred savages burn down a city. Makes it kind of hard to argue against a beefed up police force when that happens. You lefties don't want cops coming down your street in a tank, well send a message to the inner city niggers to fucking cool it. You can't burn the place down every time some shit doesn't go your way., and that's especially true when the reason you're rioting is in the defense of a F'N criminal. Jesus Christ, grow a god damn brain.
