Many conservatives (myself included) have no beef with MW laws. We do have a problem with them being enacted by Congress.....

The minimum wage is a safety net for the poor, those not as smart or motivated as you. So what that you've worked for minimum wage and now your successful so have I. But not everyone is as smart, educated and driven or as tough as you are. Some people are doing as good as they can but they will never be leaders all they'll have is a life of hard work at low wages. History has proved if there are not worker safety nets like minimum wage laws, child labor laws, overtime laws, then business does and will take advantage of the workers. What makes our country so great is we let the smart and motivated like you become successful but we still have a heart and a sense of decency and will protect the less advantaged. And without these same type of laws many successful people would be working 60 and 70 hour weeks without overtime. No one gripes about federal mandated overtime laws because that might affect them too.

No, I am opposed to states deciding this on their own, the same way I would have been opposed to states deciding to maintain slavery, child labor, etc.

The fed sets a minimum, if the local states want to increase that to compensate for cost of living in certain states, fine....

I've never said I oppose MW laws. I'd guess I'm the only person on ET who's had the dubious distinction of having a 100k trading month and having to take a MW job, in the same year.

Reflective folk know that the diff between success and failure can be a series of low probability dice rolls or that 1 out of 20 river card being dealt. I remember a Springsteen interview on Sixty Minutes where he opined that America rewards winners but not everyone can win. Who looks out for the losers? A just society treats work as sacrosanct. Toil is a gift to God. (Society)

In my view, state and local governments have the best grasp on cost of living and employment opportunities in a given geographic area. Those enamored with Federal solutions will argue that if Massachusetts has a higher wage than New Hampshire then Mass employers will be at a disadvantage to their neighbors to the north. Perhaps. By the same token jobs can flee to Ecuador or India as well. But to mandate wage equality between Manhattan and Fresno is just plain silly.....

Not necessarily, but I believe it is a somewhat meaningless number.

If anything, having a minimum wage at all might even SUPRESS wages.

I'm not an expert in labor law, of wage history by any stretch. But it would make for interesting study, if it were possible to determine what wages would be today for low-skill workers if the minimum wage had been abolished in 1980.

I'd be very suprised if they were lower, and not at all suprised if they were higher.

If so, talk about "unintended consequences". The minumimum wage law removes the workers bargaining power. For anyone who has negotiated pay, this means that the same starting point for every business has already been established before you even sit down at the table.

But then again, I could be completely wrong. I'm just glad the feds havent set a ceiling....

Oh yeah, ... they did. Reagan removed it.

This is simply more manditory Socialism: wage-distribution so money is wasted on the least productive. In the end, you have a majority of poverty. Throwing money at the poor only leads to more poor people. Throwing money at the best and the brightest and everyone wins in the convoy of humanity. This is as true as gravity and the sun in the sky.
