Perhaps these are some of the reasons, not entirely because of people's attitude. The believe is the current strain is different from the one originated from China: More contagious and so 6' social distancing may not be enough.

Also the scientists believe the true death rate is low. So in my view the economic impact and shut down need to be reexamined.

the recent SARS didn't affect Europe and US that much.
So Europe and US probably felt covid 19 wouldn't affect them that much again.

Because the leaders in the US think that there is nothing that they can learn from the rest of the world.

Most Asian countries now have COVID well under control because they all wear masks outside. Not the US. We are too busy fighting for our right to not have to wear a mask.

When the outbreak first hit the US in February, the WHO offered the US their COVID test kits, and the US said no thanks, they would build their own. Two weeks wasted. Naturally the US-built test kits did not work on the first try, so they had to do a redesign. Another two weeks wasted.

Why the US has so much trouble with covid19 ? Because there is an over abundance of stupid in the US. Common sense, isn't as common as it used to be. Arrogance and self entitlement seems to be the prevailing attitude. Pekelo is correct, we had the perfect warning(Wuhan) and a window into what would happen if covid19 found its way here. The instant we found out that 5 million people had left Wuhan before their lockdown, we should have blocked all travel from at least Asia. Instead, our leaders literally imported the virus via cruise ships and air travel. The passengers from one cruise ship were transferred to an airforce base outside of Sacramento, taken care of by military medical staff in a secure and sparsely populated location. The Fed and the CDC actually wanted transfer some of those patients to a densely populated area of Orange County. Are you F...ing kidding me!!! You can't make this shit up. A much better solution would have been for the Fed to rent vacant Hotels in Asia and Europe, turn them into pseudo mash units, and let the patients get well there. It's like a bunch of high school kids are running the country.

The US had so much trouble with the COVID because every time the country tries to be proactive, it gets shit upon. So we resort to the reactive.

Remember WWII? We got involved only AFTER Pearl Harbor was bombed. We saw what was going on in Europe, but turned a blind eye.

We got proactive on the Iraqi shit, but that was bad. Same with Afghanistan. Same with Nam. All bad bad bad.

Hell, shameful as it is, we didn't even react after the first World Trade Center bombing... we did shit. When they fell, we finally got woke to terror in the strongest way and went proactive with the Patriot Act and all the slag that followed that mess. That Act got shit upon in a big way too.

So we are now a reactive country, not proactive.

Can you imagine what would have happened if we told the entire country, at the peak of it's economic strength back in January to go into lockdown, stay-at-home etc etc? Would have been riots. Oh, wait, that's happening now.

No-win situation. We could have done better, yes, but it is no surprise we did what we did, and when.
