Why so much weight in after hour and pre market trading?

Why so much weight in after hour and pre-market trading? Volume is low but it can dominate the trend for the regular market.

Example:
  • GOOGL up 4.30% during after-hour and pre-market trading.
  • Pre-market volume 167,000.
  • Average daily volume 1,861,612.

Earnings after the close. Seems to be a strange question as you commented on the earnings move. So I assume this just another "pitch in the dirt".

FB ............... Again the pre-market dominated the move.

  • Pre-market volume 16,676,919.
  • Todays volume 120,000,000 and counting.
So far FB is trading flat during the regular market - I would think at market open the big traders would disagree with the opening price and either buy and drive FB up - or sell and drive it down.

But a volume of 120,000,000+ shares agree with the price set with a volume of 16,676,919. This is a regular occurrence during earnings.
