Why should I suffer for making all the right decisions?

I've seen the "soaring heights" of individualism tried, several times, while living in the North. Many come hoping to be self-sufficient (as opposed to self-reliant), and they fail. Miserably. In "madness and want", as Emerson put it. Bullets, fishhooks, at least a knife or axe, all products of other men's labor, are required. No man is an island.
