With all due respect to you and to an established product like Matlab...
Why spend thousands of dollars on a matlab like commercial product ?
Here are two Python module packages who's users have come from Matlab to a better, faster, easier, and opensource (also free, as in beer) sw.
Notice who the developers of numarray are... heard of the hubble space telescope?
Scipy
Numarray
These are nice packages - I use them. I also use Matlab - although not so much anymore - and Mathematica.
Engineers are usually trained these days to use Matlab. Some Scientists are trained to use Mathematica and Maple as well as other pakcages available through national labs and many of which are now open sourced - BLAS etc.
Our goal is to use open source when we can - which is most of the time. Some things are just better done in Mathematica or in some cases Matlab, or in other cases our own libraries written in C.
And yes, this is my last post.
