Why is volume so low?

And today is LOWER than the Friday's over the last couple of weeks in many of the stocks I follow.

Of course Columbus day plays a role. Bond markets are closed, people are taking a long weekend.

Wow so the S&P hit a new 52 week high on the lowest volume day of the year. For some reason I feel like that screams of stock market manipulation or that buying has pretty much just dried completely up at a peak. We need a historical comparison to see where it goes from here.
