Why is twitter still trading?

Although I am wondering if you buy the stock now which is trading well below Musk's price, do you get the $54.20 when you sell it to Musk when the deal closes?
You would get the payout after the deal closes. It's possible the deal will break, and the stock price then falls, of course.

I thought the deal is already finalized. And Twitter has already agreed to sell the company to Elon Musk for $44 billion and Elon Musk has already secured financing for it. How can it break? Wouldn't either of Twitter of Elon Musk be sued for breach of contract if the deal doesn't go through? Do we get to see the sale agreement?

The deal will take some time (6 months - 1 year) to close. Before it finally closes anything can happen. Haven’t you seen some past deals fell through before?

The deal might break if a majority of shareholders vote to not approve it, for example.

Can God be sued?:D That's above my pay grade.

The basic breach of contract elements require you to prove:

  1. There was a valid contract;
  2. You performed your part of the contract;
  3. The defendant failed to perform their part of the contract; and
  4. You sustained damages caused by the defendant’s breach.

Elon Musk is not God even assuming God can be sued. So can Elon Musk not being able to come up with his financing be considered as not fulfilling the performance of the contract on his part, thus constituting a breach of contract? I guess it also depends on what it says in the contract. Do we get to know what the agreement says?

like a house purchase. They have an agreement but there are closing conditions (generally due diligence and government approvals)

Exactly. The deal is done between selling and buying parties but the special interests still have their say before it closes.
