Why is the market selling off

I was feeling hungry and with the profit I can buy a pizza :p

Stop at 42.85 would have been touched anyway

I only sensed the smell of pizza in the air :D

Can anyone recap when curbs have been used in the past? How often do they kick them in?

Go the the NYSE site and search on curbs. Personally, I think they really do work. As Nick pointed out with his own $s today -- and I have seen a number of times myself -- when they kick in the selling ends and some buying begins. It's not a cure all but it does prevent a viscious cycle from escalating. As to how often they get used, just look for historical days with large ranges.

Yes but thats after months and years of downtrending, this is a correction in a uptrend.

Pedantic time frame arguement.

Quote from NickBarings:

I didn't use those curbs , just have the S&P cash and futures
in front of me, only price

Then you were one lucky guy to call the bottom like that. :)

Really? Your right, I guess I should know what is going to happen next. Can you help me foresee the future and make since of these markets, please?
Yes, certainly.
Start working on it. Don't expect to get any result within the first 10 years.

we are nearing "the perfect storm".

rising interest rates
poorly run government
Weakning dollar
Inflation concerns
Expensive energy
Bubble markets in real estate and commodities, and several stocks.

and the list just keeps on growing.

I think the market has discounted any decent IRAQ news a long time ago. It is already seen as a collosal failure. I think even catching bin laden would be a minor blip. There is almost no way to make that a winning situation.

i simply do see any stimulous that could possible continue the bull market...
