Why is "ADD" called a disorder, let alone "treated"?

Quote from ammo:

if i read a book i can sometimes read 3 pages while my mind goes off on a thought that was 2 pages ago,i have to go back and reread snce i wasn't paying attention,in trading your mind needs to adjust constantly, with the price of the dollar, oil, spus, naz, that constant mental jumping around is how the thought process works with add, adhd jumps around even faster, add persons are better at multitasking, for this reason

I prefer a sprint to a marathon. I may take four separate sprints to run your mile while you may complete a mile non stop. I'm running a half a dozen various one mile races simultaneuosly.

I totally support home schooling these days, as long as the parent has their s--- together. For this reason, I tend to believe that couples who need double income to survive aren't financially ready for kids - someone needs to take the time to educate them because the school sure isn't doing a good job.

While I agree that public schools are worthless for the most part, I have to say that if all of the couples that had children in the future were single-income families, there wouldn't be enough kids left to overpopulate the schools and overwork the teachers! I see where you're coming from, but single-income families are hard to find nowadays. It's just not financially feasible.

Quote from trackstar:

Growing up I was an ADD/ADHD child. I drove my parents crazy. My doctor and teachers all wanted me on drugs but my parents never gave in. To this day I am very happy they didnt. Because the not being able to "focus" is a blessing and a curse. Once you are forced to deal with it you learn to use it to your advantage. I multitask all day every day, I don't spend a lot of time on one thing, even trading.

As an adult I still have a ton of energy and do high intensity workouts every single day(lift weights or run 10 miles+).
Agreed. Same story here.

I wasnt diagnosed until I was in college (simly b/c I managed to get through life pretty well, etc)

It is very much a double edged sword, as the severity of the condition depends on the individual.

Tried Ritalin when I was diagnosed (didnt do much for me) so I havent taken any drugs for it.

To me, the biggest problems are those indirectly attributed to ADD.. Low self esteem is common due to constantly getting reprimanded by family or teachers growing up in the formative years.

Also, inadvertant "self medicating" by possibly abusing alochol/drugs to "calm down" seems more common with those with ADD.
