Why “going Rand” would be an electoral disaster

Pretty well stated, Pie. I think the traditional republican coalition of low tax, strong defense and family values advocates is showing fault lines. Bush discredited the defense hawks, and the family values crowd has been put on their back foot by gay marriage, pot, etc. Half the country pay no taxes, so lowering taxes is a very targeted appeal.

Bottom line is the door is wide open for an unorthodox republican candidate, with the two most obvious being Rand Paul and Ted Cruz. The fear that they would split the party is overblown because the party is already split. The John McCain/Colin Powell/Bush crowd are as likely to support Hillary as they are Paul. But Paul or Cruz could attract disgruntled and ignored members of the democrat coalition, particulalry young people put off by the Clinton sleaze and the fact she is such stale old news.
I agree. I think I may agree with all of it! This is why we should not discount at all the probability of a "Republican" victory. But god help anyone who tries to then govern based on their campaign promises. They would still have a Congress controlled by the mainline parties to deal with.

40% or more are hardcore democrats. They will vote for the democrat even if he is Adolph Hitler.

20% are hardcore small government, fiscal conservative low tax advocates

another 20% are hard core cultural conservatives who don't give a shit about the economy. Recently they have voted with the republicans, but if a republican is not anti gay and anti abortion they will vote for the democrat who is for the "working man."

52% are women.

Pure, theoretical libertarianism is not a viable governing philospohy.

Couldn't be more wrong. How do you think America became America? On the radical left wing agenda of heaping socialism and gigantic taxes? Or the endless war agenda and big brother surveillance state embraced by the Right?

I have a lot of respect for you, but you do realize it's these status quo asswipes you advocate for time and again, that have brought this country to it's knees, politically, financially, and legally? You're an old guy and don't have the stones to embrace freedom, something that made this country great. I get it. But you really need to sit down and get out of the way of the younger generation who do get it. A restoration of the Constitution and a repudiation of this massive Federal behemoth is the only thing that can right this listing ship of state. And that isn't gonna happen with the likes of another Corporate Republican whore like Jeb Bush or John McCain, who just grease the skids and sell this country out the backdoor, as usual.

You do realize that respected economists and hedge fund managers are calling for an imminent dollar collapse. US debt to GDP > 103%. US Treasury adding 1 Trillion to the national debt each year. You guys don't get it. It's like you're in a fucking coma. 2011 really happened. Greece, Italy, Portugal, Ireland, Spain - all sovereign defaults....except the IMF and ECB bailed them out. No country is large enough to bailout the US Treasury market. Get it through your head, guys. EVEN IF we wanted to continue this bullshit nanny-warfare state, where we borrow 40 cents of every dollar we spend, WE CAN'T AFFORD IT. Anyway, I'm beyond it. The whole thing is gunna collapse right on our heads because we were all too busy making excuses for why we were such sackless cowards. Too afraid to embrace freedom.....doesn't get much worse than that.

Oh, I'm aware of the "odds". Well, as much as anyone can be when it's over two years to the election date. LOL!
ok, just don't confuse who you want to win, or who you think SHOULD win with who is going to win.

When Pavlov rings his bell, the 5 networks will start salivating over a woman President.
You will see documentaries on PBS about Margaret Thatcher, the "Iron Lady", forget the fact that she was a conservative.

otherwise, the sooner you bet, the better odds you will get

Me personally? I would not want to bet on a republican

Cruz wears more eye makeup than Hillary

Rubio can't make a speech without a drink of water

Rand terrifies republicans with his refusal to kill anyone who disagrees with U.S.A.

Like I said, the only one who has a snowball's chance in hell is Ben Carson

and if he is the nominee, then all bets are off

it could be very close

wouldn't want to bet on it

Wow, I hardly know where to begin. How about with the "status quo asswipes" I supposedly favor. I have dozens of posts lambasting McCain, Bush, Romney, Boehner, et al. I was particularly outraged by Boehner's undermining Ted Cruz on defunding obamacare.

Rallying for "freedom" sounds great. It's the details that get messy for libertarians. Take the number one issue facing our country, massive unchecked illegal immigration. Well, one of the Libertarian Party's core positions is opposition to immigration control. They style it as the "free flow of labor." I call it turning our country into mexico.

It's bracing to argue that no one should be forced to care for others. Certainly we waste way too much money on welfare, etc and encourage dysfunctional behavior. I don't think the public is going to embrace having large numbers of people living hand to mouth on the streets like you see in India however.

I have argued repeatedly that we are heading for trouble with the budget and dollar. The only reason we've skated this long is other countries are more socialistic. Part of the problem with the dollar however is massive trade deficits, a product of a libertarian ideal, free trade.

Your post inadvertently made my point. Libertarianism is not a viable governing philosophy. I agree with you on maybe 75% of issues and are far closer to your positions than democrats, yet you insult me. Good luck with that as a political strategy.
