A while back, I think it was killthesunshine had a vegan thread. I was on the other side of the argument. But I did read some of the links and did some more research on my own. Dang if I don't think the whole vegan thing has some truth to it. I have definitely cut down on red meat and the quantity of chicken and fish, can't do the strict vegan thing, but cutting down on saturated fats. I went on a life calculator and putting in my stats before changing some eating and exercise habits it showed me clocking out at 79. It's probably wrong, my dads about that age and still going strong after chain smoking for 65 years and being a hard drinker and he is an epic worrier, but physically doing ok. I digress, then I put in the calculator with a healthier diet, more exercise and it came to lasting till 97. That made me think, damn it would be so nice to be healthy and have fun hanging out with my grand kids when their grown and being there for them. Anyway that pretty much was my motivation and even though killthesunshine was a total ass sometimes I'm glad he busted my chops on that thread.
I do feel much healthier on a lower animal protein diet, again not a vegan but not staying away from beef except for a treat now and then.
NOW you're gettin' it

I first started experimenting w/diet in 1979. Tried everything(almost) and when I found something that made me feel better, I kept that; something not so good, I dropped it.
Unfortunately, whatever you wanna believe is out there in print somewhere. Can make it tough to wade through all of the crap to find the few goodies that matter. Much easier today, tho, with the web and much better research and numbers to back up that research.
One of the first things I did was fry up some pork chops(yummy). BIG fav from my youth. Try 'em with zero seasonings, zero sauce, zero anything and you'll get a hint that maybe, just maybe, pork chops shouldn't be on our menu.
As I posted above, after all is said and done, I feel that you're better off starting with what you oughta be feeding your face, rather that what to take away. Make sure you're getting the essential nutrients FIRST, adapt to that, then see if your tastes for some of the crap food go away. Chances are you'll find it much easier to do away w/garbage stuff you've eaten for years.
It definitely takes time(weeks/months) to adapt to a cleaner diet, especially depending upon what you're coming from(I used to eat steak/baked potato/light salad for typical dinner, so I know).
It's also worth considering that the big food companies that control most of what YOU think YOU know are mainly interested in growing profits. Killing off their customers doesn't bother them, as there's a brand new crop of know-nothings coming right along(your children).
Don't fully believe whatever you read until you fully investigate it for yourself. What works will work; what won't won't.
