i worked for a very large option trader. often the phrase "put up your house to gain a bicycle" would come up. we were short the same strikes that busted niederhoffer, difference was we come up with the margin.

trading short is always my first choice and i have just learned to accept the consequences of my commitment. m
 
Most of the discussions we are talking about naked put / calls. What do you think about selling spreads, where the risk is reduced, though the the reward is also smaller. However you would still have some kind of buffer if you are wrong.
