Less than 2% of Canadians are muslims so obviously you are not experiencing problems yet. Wait till they constitute 10-15% of the Canadian population as is the case in many European countries, then you'll find out what they really think of your melting pot, your culture, your religion and your judeo-christian values. The french, the dutch and the brits are finding that out right now.

I mean, afterall, it was his lobby(s) that started this storm in the cup, racist campaign, thing in an attempt to provoke the western world to carry its nazi like policy on its behalf. I do! I hate them for their freedom. I am jealous! They have a lower crime rate, less poverty, less cretinous leaders, cleaner cities, and their women are slimmer, taller, blonder, better looking, and easier!

I hate Norwegians even worse! They have all that oil money. If their national endowment keeps growing, none of them will ever have to work for a living again.

I spend about a month every year in Italy, hope to increase that ratio.
There is indeed a remarkable level of separation between ethnic foreigners and autochtones in Italy. The recognition of some national identity and historical roots is important to preserve norms and values, as we currently call them here in the Netherlands. We are in a total war to regain those values that were lost when we disdained our own cultural heritage. Everything from before 1960 is old and uninteresting here.
Still, I think some modest form integration is desirable and possible, even with regard to authentic national identity. You may find this strange but in Austria, in Vienna, of all places, I saw very dark-skinned Africans (they really stick out in Vienna) that had somehow become real Austrians. They fit better in that city than I did, and they were proud of it. (Austria is generally famous for its friendliness to foreigners, as you wil know.). They were proud to be Austrian. More proud that the Dutch are to be dutch.
I think it is possible to have foreign cultured immigrants learn to become inhabitants of their new country and to become proud of it as well.
But only if the original population is proud of their country and culture as the Italians are, and the Dutch are not.
