Why does California have so much industry/jobs?

Quote from WS_MJH:

Don't have the quote that you cited but some interesting comments. I've heard that Austin's tech scene has been losing momentum over the past couple of years, as evidenced by gowalla being beaten foursquare. It'll be very interesting if over the next five to ten years if NYC can get to parity with the silicon valley regarding tech. I think it can because NYC actually has many more advantages, SV just has its built in base.

Regarding taxes, the guy you cited mentioned people pay high taxes so the quality of life is better. People are better educated, healthier, etc. If that were true, then Detroit would have the best school system, RI would be an economic dynamo, CA would have the best health care. In fact, some of the best schools are in red states, FL and TX are the best as per Newsweek.

High taxes don't make an area better for its people; it's the quality of the people that make it better. CA/NYC et al do well because of the people; they are just so successful that they succeed despite high taxes. If CA/NY lowered their taxes and became sane economically, they'd boom.
interesting, I think that's the first time in a long time that I read anywhere that people make a difference

I will say with a young daughter at almost primary school age, you should really consider the kind of school system you would be moving into.

CA is a basket case school-wise which is why A: So many people send their kids to private school (at significant cost) or B: try to buy or scam their way into a good school district (my wife and I have a friend who is trying to convince us to let their 6 year old use our address as his residence so he can attend school in our district, and these people live in LONG BEACH [about 20 miles away from us, imagine having to take that kid to school everyday in traffic, but that is how desperate and competitive these situations can be when only the upper middle class and rich can afford to live in a district with decent public schools]).

As another poster mentioned, there are huge cutbacks at many school districts here so finding a teaching job may be difficult, although all I know on this topic is what I read in the news so this should be verified by your wife or others with more specific knowledge.

I will say the area around Santa Clarita is really, really pretty. It gets hot over there though, real hot (think 110F+ in the summer with no breeze). I don't know a lot about the area but I believe it is somewhat depressed from a RE boom/bust. I concur with the other poster that he would rather leave the state than live inland, but hey there are ten million people living inland so obviously it works for some people.

I wish you and your family the best. One good idea may be to rent for a year or two (or at least one complete set of "seasons") and explore the area extensively before deciding to put down roots.

Quote from Vinny1:

I have a family of 3 (wife and one 4 year old daughter). My wife is an elementary school teacher so she can probably find a job anywhere that is reasonably close to home, no need to commute to downtown LA. I am self employed and work from home, so no need to commute to downtown LA either.

Do you know anything about a town called Canyon Country? How is that area? It is right next to Santa Clarita (about 34 miles northwest of Los Angeles) I found many affordable homes there. Here is one for $350k...

Doesn't appear anyone is answering the actual question. You're all talking about why it's a "nice" place to live. The answer to the question is, Mexicans working for slave wages.

I am a trader in Los Angeles (West Hollywood). Looking to share an office space with somebody in trading/investments. I trade options and stock mostly, with some futures and have been doing so in one form or another for the last 10 years. Will morph this into a hedge fund eventually. I will entertain any area of Los Angeles but prefer W. Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Century City, West Side, etc.

If everybody had an ocean
Across the U. S. A.
Then everybody'd be surfin'
Like Californi-a
You'd seem 'em wearing their baggies
Huarachi sandals too
A bushy bushy blonde hairdo
Surfin' U. S. A.

You'd catch 'em surfin' at Del Mar
Ventura County line
Santa Cruz and Trestle
Australia's Narrabeen
All over Manhattan
And down Doheny Way

Everybody's gone surfin'
Surfin' U.S.A.

We'll all be planning that route
We're gonna take real soon
We're waxing down our surfboards
We can't wait for June
We'll all be gone for the summer
We're on surfari to stay
Tell the teacher we're surfin'
Surfin' U. S. A.

Haggerties and Swamies
Pacific Palisades
San Onofre and Sunset
Redondo Beach L. A.
All over La Jolla
At Wa'imea Bay.

Everybody's gone surfin'
Surfin' U.S. A.

Republicans attempt humor, say schools in red states educate people

Go to the end of that thread on this site, facts and reality have a liberal bias.

What's the deal with the inhabitants of West Afghanistan (the South)? They have lower tax rates than NY/CA/NJ/CT but don't produce squat as measured by gdp per capita/median income/etc.. ??

yes, I think it is now widely accepted by modern monetary theorists that taxes are a drain on the economy, but just simply lowering them will not produce growth.

:California...knows how to party
California...knows how to party
In the citaaay of L.A.
In the citaaay of good ol' Watts
In the citaaay, the city of Compton
We keep it rockin! We keep it rockin!

[Verse One: Dr. Dre]

Now let me welcome everybody to the wild, wild west
A state that's untouchable like Elliot Ness
The track hits ya eardrum like a slug to ya chest
Pack a vest for your Jimmy in the city of sex
We in that sunshine state with a bomb ass hemp beat
the state where ya never find a dance floor empty
And pimps be on a mission for them greens
lean mean money-makin-machines servin fiends
I been in the game for ten years makin rap tunes
ever since honeys was wearin sassoon
Now it's '95 and they clock me and watch me
Diamonds shinin lookin like I robbed Liberace
It's all good, from Diego to tha Bay
Your city is tha bomb if your city makin pay
Throw up a finger if ya feel the same way
Dre puttin it down for

[repeat 1]

[2]-Shake it shake it baby
Shake it shake it baby
Shake it shake it mama
Shake it Cali
Shake it shake it baby
Shake it shake it shake it shake it...

[Verse Two: 2Pac]

Out on bail fresh outta jail, California dreamin
Soon as I stepped on the scene, I'm hearin hoochies screamin
Fiendin for money and alcohol

Only in Cali where we riot not rally to live and die
In L.A. we wearin Chucks not Ballies (that's right)
Dressed in Locs and khaki suits and ride is what we do
Flossin but have caution we collide with other crews
Famous cause we program worldwide
Let'em recognize from Long Beach to Rosecrans
Bumpin and grindin like a slow jam, it's west side
So you know the row won't bow down to no man
Say what you say
But give me that bomb beat from Dre
Let me serenade the streets of L.A.
From Oakland to Sacktown
The Bay Area and back down
Cali is where they put they mack down
Give me love!
[rpt 1]
