Why Do So Many Working Age Americans Choose Not To Enter The Workforce?

Nobody gets all those benefits. And nobody gets to so precisely self-determine their wages that they can game the benefits tiers. Our safety net is not a perfect system (which would require a lot more administration) but it's certainly no worse than more generous countries which have higher LFPR.

First of all, how do you know what portion of benefits people apply for? If they are entitled to it under the law, and aware of it, what could you possibly feel would prevent them?

Second, people look at it from a perceived benefit vs. perceived effort. Ie, there is a price that they are willing to accept to not work, because work is - by definition - work. So if someone can make $30,000 by doing nothing (making up numbers here for example) it beats making $45,000 and working your ass off.

But if you could only make $15,000 in benefits, working might be far more attractive because of the lifestyle change.

Lastly, there are many developed countries that have absurdly higher youth unemployment rates because of their developed social nets AND lack of work. It's not just one factor.

Right, this is just common sense...A sort of reality versus idealism argument...There is a reason why Social Security Disability Claims have skyrocketed...a reason why Food Stamp Usage has skyrocketed...Regardless of the labor force participation rate, there is most certainly a growing segment of the population that has decided that living off of the government is a far better alternative than low wage employment...

you are so wrong on this one, I don't think you deal with the public much.
in california we have social workers who go to hospitals and try to help even illegals maximize their benefits. it seems to me that the who democrat concept in Ca was let in illegals then govt has to hire more social workers to help people get all their benefits... then bring in the families then hire more cops and teachers and union members who will vote democratic to raise their own income and benes. People in California know their handouts... because they have friends and family advising them on how to max it out.

additionally

we have people who try and game the system to get benefits they don't really qualify for.
beating the govt is a way of life for some groups.

also what about all the seasonal people who game unemployment benefits.
govt workers who wait to their last year and go out on disability so they don't have to pay taxes.

all this might be tolerable if the govt and the fed were also not killing us with inflation and job exportation.

This welfare queen bit has been so thoroughly debunked by so many different sources that one hardly knows where to start on it. How much we pay out, how the poor qualify, how long the benefits last, poor household spending patterns, and on and on. Of course there are outliers, there are always outliers. But they do not represent the whole. Hence, we have "so many" as the measure of the problem. The rest of the polling data and charts from gallup, etc., are all circumstantial evidence.

It is the truth.

My gf is a state-paid "mentor" for a disabled person. He is on SS disability and rightly so. But he wants to be as productive as possible. When we find him a job he shows up on time and has a strong work ethic. To our horror we discovered that every penny he makes on the job is subtracted from his SS disability benefit. What incentive is there then for him to work?

We know people who receive disability payments, free HUD housing, EBT cash and subsistence cards, utility assistance, free telephone service. And get this, several of them receive free medical marijuana, something like 4 ounces per month, that they promptly sell to others. All receive free (no copayment) medical care from the state. If they have kids they also receive state vouchers for staple food items like milk, bread, fruitjuice, grains, pastas, rice and meats.

It takes a substantial income to replace all of that and very few attempt to do so.

Actually it hasn't been, but you are a limousine liberal who never steps foot into a grocery store (by your own admission)...Long on theory, short on common sense...

I admire your persistence Jem...but you are "debating" some of the most intellectually dishonest people you will ever come across...Just getting these leftists to ever admit that one of their pet causes is not 100% above board is next to impossible...Forget about reasoning with them...
