Why do people use Volume, Range and Tic charts?

Been using volume charts for a while, chose 2500 on the ES simply because I liked how it looked, not too fast, not too slow. 2401 looks nearly the same. I doubt there is any magic in odd # charts per se.

No magic. They allow you to increae/(decrease) the values of your charts in a logical progression based on the "time-frame" you want to trade and they type of trading you want to do.

Scalp'in ain't Swing'in.

You have that right JJ and having total control over your trading enviroment time increments is wonderful too.

Well stated.

This thread cracks me up.

there is no statisitical or other evidence of any objectivity indicating that one sized chart or increment has any advantage over any other. the entire conversation is silly.

Why do you want to be a part of a "silly" thread then surf?

A man of your towering abilities should be providing something just a little more substantial than "silly"

i just want to save someone years of going down the wrong trail. thinking about sizes of charts , etc is not proper thinking.

i adjust the tic size to fit only yesterdays range into the portion of the screen the chart is at. Thats the only reason to adjust tic size.

So please explain to all of us the exact parameters of what I do. We are all ears there smurf. I'm on pins and needles to hear an intelligent explanation from you on this. I stress intelligent too.

I adjust the number of ticks in each period to get my short-term average true range to a certain level (8 - 12 ticks -- not to confuse these ticks--i.e., minimum fluctuation--with those ticks--i.e., a single trade). I've found that my system works best when the ATR value is in that range.
