Why do people use Tradingview if your Broker let's you use Charts for free?

Since you really can't view the major indices in the IB TWS platform, I use TradingView (or Investing.com) to glance at the major indices. If anyone knows a way to view the major indices in TWS, please let me know. Nothing fancy- just Last price, $ Change and % Change. I monitor QQQ and SPY in TWS but still like to view the major indices.

Quote window in TWS mosaic then link it to a chart window. Click on the symbol and the chart will change.

Thanks. I'm looking for a simple list of indices: Last price, $ Change and % Change. Charts would be great but it's not necessary. Haven't figured out how to do it. Even in the Favorites tab (in the Monitor window), if I enter an index symbol, it shows a being unknown.

The key advantage of TradingView is it's easy of use and accessibility. There's a bit of a learning curve with most other charting packages that assume a certain amount of knowledge and they are not as accessible because you either had to log into a broker's platform which required multiple stages or you had to install software. With TradingView you simply type in the URL which is also in your browsers history and bam, you're logged in and the chart is loaded to your exact requirements. TradingView also seized the opportunity with crypto so traders now had a reliable charting platform that they could access 24 * 7 while most other broker's charts were only being used during weekdays. Once traders became accustomed to TradingView they didnt see a need to revert back to an inferior product.

While TradingView is arguably the best charting platform available it's certainly not without its flaws. The key problem for me is your limited in your ability to customise the chart display. Screen real estate is always an important consideration when setting up multiple charts on a single monitor and TW doesn't allow you to remove the right side panels that take up an unnecessary amount of room. You've also got the bottom section for strategy testing that can't be hidden as well. You might be asking yourself why am I being forced to see those panels when I'll probably never use them. I'll give you a hint; it's because your ideas are a valuable resource!

The same reason I pay for a subscription at stock charts.com but my broker provides very nice charting for “free” as well. Because aesthetically charts on stock chartS.com look a lot better and smoother than T.O.S. charts. And stock charts offer a lot of features as well that I use that T.O.S. doesn’t.
