Why Do People Trade?

Quote from Grandluxe:

Lawyers? really?
well, they were suppose to take your case regardless of what the payout would be, because they were "professional" and operated just like your doctor or college professor.

At least, that's the way it was back in the days of "Leave It To Beaver." (or so we believed.)

Quote from Handle123:

From the moment you are born, you have to trade one thing for another. Everyone breathing is trading something, so everyone can be considered traders. At some point, people start finding their speciality and concentrate more of their time into one area.

Trading of products and services allows an economy to price at marginal cost of production, take advantage of economies of scale, allow competition to take place, among other things. I view it as a must, and I believe is a core reason why cities are generally richer than the country side.

What about the same question in the context of trading as discussed in this forum?

I could write more, but let others contribute as well.

I trade, because there's no role more important to society than bringing liquidity to financial markets. Traders are the backbone of the American economy.

Trading is safe. When you run into real problems that we mostly avoid with stops, hedges and other forms of risk management, a person can dial 1-800-PPT.
Clearing functions, end of day pricing and settlement will be suspended and time and low interest liquidity will be granted so we can go about the business of restoring our accounts.
The only downside is you are required to wear a little dress and pink tights for a year but as far as i can tell this is waived if you appear before congress.
I dont see a downside to this business.

That is your reply? That is as deep as you can think? You can't come up with a coherent counter argument? All you can say is "Bullshit!" Not just bulllshit, but "total and utter". That's the best you got? Have you really thought this through? Or did I strike a nerve which caused a knee jerk reaction?

i know people who work in banks, insurance companies, hospitals, supermarkets etc etc etc who are employees of that company, whose function is not trading anything, who would be deeply insulted by your comment that they are " one step above being slaves".

Quote from tradingjournals:

Why do people trade in financial markets?

IMO pages could be written regarding this subject as we all are/have different situation in life

Regarding myself (trade isn’t my job) I trade because;
1) I like to gamble*
2) Challenge (get green)
3) Another source of income (years ago, to improve my life + increase the assets)
4) Pass my time (now, to earn few extra “cents “ to improve my spending review (I like to eat and drink well ))

That is me :)

*although I know many might not agree on that word ,but to me where there isn't a sure return it is a “gamble" then I agree that trading could be more profitable maybe less risky with better odds then betting on horses, casino, etc ..

Visaria, you are absolutely correct. A society is where we all have a piece of the action. Everyone is not destined to reach the
top, regardless what the politicians say.

How often do we hear "I hired him/her at entry level with a chance to prove themselves for advancement", then they quit after a few weeks because the promotions were SLOW in coming. You get the idea!!

The lure of trading is "you can make it fast", it was designed that way to draw in specs so the business person can lay off their risk, the LURE is what keeps the game going. Thus the average new spec comes in expecting to be a star player on a playing field with the professionals. The Chicago White Sox told Michael Jordan he had to go to the minors and try to make the team, he was so confused with fast balls all he could do is stick his tounge out as he swung at the ball in vain.

Trading, by design allows raw rookies to play on the same field as the top stars.............is it really a surprise that at best 10% do all the scoring and the 90% pay their wages?

CORRECTION: TONGUE, that word always tied up my tongue........:)

Nodoji was on a soccer team a few years ago, surely a great member of the team, she also was an up and coming trader.

Let's imagine she was torn between making a decision about becoming a professional soccer player and a trader. Nod calls Mia Hamm and said she decided to join her USA team and is going to play in the next game, nod hears a CLICK as Mia hangs up.

Ok, nod says to herself, I will work on becoming a trader.........it was not easy to get there as she once said: "why can't I do this, I always did what I set out to do?" She toughened up and found her own way because there were bills coming in and needed a wage more than a pipedream....
