The simple and correct answer is that our govt was too afraid SH was going to give terrorist's nuclear weapons.

It's quite debatable about the appropriateness of us getting involved with desert storm but SH was alarmingly close to having a nuclear bomb (6mos) which our intelligence missed completely before the war.

SH surrendered but almost immediately began violating the terms of surrender, which meant legally we could go in and kick his ass anytime we felt like it. Anyway the violations got bolder and bolder.

SH did an excellent job of convincing his neighbors he had weapons of mass destruction in order to wield power in the region.

Unfortunately his pretending to have weapons to his neighbors but claiming not to but evicting UN weapons inspectors was a dumb move. Our intelligence almost always behind the curve thought they had learned from underestimating him in the first gulf war, ending up overestimating his capacity later.

Now we are in the process of making iraq a forward base of operations for fighting threats to western civilization from muzlin cancer.

Because Israel said that Saddam was an enemy of Israel, and since they could not fight him and wanted other for fight for them, they fabricated lies (WMD, and so on) which W bought without second guessing.
