It's the press. They do have a huge influence on how things are quoted, what gets quoted and the context it is provided in. Many surveys show 80%+ of the "mainstream press" are registered Democrats. You bet that gets in the way of how things are edited and reported.
An example - I lived in Texas when I was in the Army from 93-97. During that time, GWB debated and ran against Ann Taylor, about the smoothest talker in the Democratic party, and beat her straight up in 94. He was governor until 2000. During that time, I never recall him being described as a buffoon, idiot, retard, stupid, or anything similar. In fact, he was widely regarded in Texas by most as being highly successful, with the state doing very well, and his initiatives around education and treatment of juvenile crime getting a ton of credit.
That all changed overnight, from when he began to run for President. Now I'm not saying he flubbed his words, said stupid things from time to time, and shouldn't be responsible for a lack of planning around Iraq, but as far as the hold stubpidity thing is concerned, its funny how it popped up overnight, and then repeated over and over on the evening news, and even Hollywood was jumping on board. It's like they all were reading off the same script.
Anyone from Texas during that time, feel free to give an opinion. Was he framed in the same way from 94-2000, by press probably much closer to him on a day to day basis?
I consider myself Libertarian for the most part, but it is interesting how Republicans are invariably described as "mean," "angry", and as being rife with sexual problems, while Democrats always have "hope", "diversity", "middle class roots", conscience", etc when they are described on the news. And there's never a line drawn between Spitzer, McGreevy, and others the way there is between Republicans. Just funny really. Must work though I figure.
