Why America couldn't even spend the economic stimulus package?

Quote from Mike Morrison:

i don't think you understand how it works or what "spent" means.

Our company is contracted to do about 3 million in work this year that is being paid for by stimulus money. First the projects had to be identified and approved. Then the buildings needed to be imspected to determine the scope of work. Then the architects have to draw up the plans. Then it goes out for bid. Now we have to wait for the weather to warm up before we start working. We probably won't start until April, so we''ll finish sometime arouynd August. Then the money will be spent and we'll get paid. It takes a while.Things don't happen overnight.

Do you own the company or work for it? What project, building or area if you don't mind?

nice find...

These are the projects that are just given to city and state employees to keep busy for the time being.

These jobs serve no real benefit to future growth in the economy moving further, the economy doesnt get stronger with trillions in stimulus building new bike trails and parks.

What a waste of money.

Here is the best part - "The most expensive path is a 2,000-foot boardwalk to be built for $10.6 million along the east bank of the Schuylkill from the end of a current trail at Locust Street to South Street. Construction could begin in a few months."

$5300 a foot to build a boardwalk ??? No wonder this country is bankrupt. The future is here right now and bankrupt.

Quote from S2007S:

The stimulus money going towards these projects in my opinion is just to keep the economy rolling along for another 6-12 months, there after the downfall in the economy is coming back. These pojects are being forced on the economy, if the economy was still in growth mode these projects that they made up out of thin air would have never taken place. These projects are just being done because of stimulus, they are pulling these projects out of thin air just to keep people at work, what happens after all the stimulus money is spent, what other projects can they possibily come up with next.

There are endless projects in my industry that will have to be done one way or another over the next fews years because they've been put off so long. As is normally the case you are clueless.

I'm a part owner. The project is for a local housing authority. This monet represents about 15% of the biz we have lined up for the year. There are more projects going out for bid than I've ever seen. I'm shocked at all the work thats out there. It will be our best year ever by 2-3x.

Quote from S2007S:

EXACTLY, why no one understands this is beyond me...

They will be losing their jobs once this stimulus money is through with, it was only put through to keep people from being laid off months ago.

You are such a babe in the woods I almost feel sorry for you. My HS daughter has a better understanding of how the world works than you do.

Gov't never gets smaller. Washington will keep bailing out the states and taxpayers on a national level will foot the bills. A few may get laid off but not enough to matter. Watch and learn.

I live in Chicago suburbs. I was told that in one of rich suburbs, contractors charge close to $1000 to put a stop sign. Now that sign has probably $10 of metal in it and $5 of Paint. Rest is insurance and Union and city workers working at the special Union and City wages. Then there are insurance at every step you take.

I am not surprised at $5300 a foot for boardwalk.

I agree with you. The only way out for the common folk is to stop spending on anything except what is 100% essential.

With that money saved, we should finance the comfortable retirement of the city officials.

Quote from pspr:

Most of that money was earmarked for Democratic pet projects that don't even happen for another year or two. It even included money for the part of the health care bill they wanted to hide. It wasn't a stimulus package but a Democratic pork wish list. No wonder it didn't create many jobs (other than more government bureaucracy jobs).

Quote from spd:

My dad spent all of December putting together ridiculously elaborate bid proposals (in triplicate) for construction projects in the city of El Paso (apartment complex rehab jobs mostly). He was told these jobs were part of the stimulus plan and the money had to be spent.

All but 2 jobs were cancelled, Im guessing they just decided to keep the money. I wonder how much money was wasted between he and all the other contractors who spent their time and money bidding these jobs?
This is the only (sad) explanation.
Too bad.

They could build superhighways, and generate jobs on almost-deserted towns, as to "improve rural areas".

Keynesianism works best when its not needed, somewhat "wasteful", of course its not a waste as it creates jobs.
