Who on this forum you learned the most from?

Quote from Thunderdog:

I have two questions in response to this thread.

First, I cannot imagine for the life of me why anyone would disclose the manner in which they trade to others, especially anonymous others. Given the enormity of effort and personal commitment required to design a superior trading strategy, what possible motivation would anyone have to begin diluting it?

Second, what, specifically, have you learned from these traders? Did they disclose their methods of trading? And if so, have those methods actually already made money for you consistently, or will they begin to yield results any day now? And if it was not their entire methods that they disclosed, was it a few odds and ends; tidbits that helped you along the way? If so, please share what those tidbits are. Surely they are not secret, since you picked them up on these forums. I'm just curious to know what kind of information you picked up here that you could not have picked up on your own just by studying the markets. Really.

(As for me, I have found ET to be most helpful when it comes to matters of software and hardware. Period.)

my sentiments too.

however.....

i think many of the 'elite posters' dont necessarily have to reveal their methods. market knowledge of how the actual markets function is way more valuable than any method - which will have only a limited exposure of profitability anyhow.

so the real value comes from market knowledge/experience, and also the mental sides of trading - self-control/awareness. this is something i think jack is good at.

the truth is though, that few people, and i mean VERY FEW people actually have full acknowledgement of the FUNCTIONS of an exchange v say an otc market, the structure of trading, and the goals and income streams of those who adept in the markets. those that do know aint giving it away easily. why should they? most people could figure it out in a few weeks if they applied themselves properly (but then there is still the mental issues to deal with).

also.....

if i were to reveal a method that reliably gave an average return of say 2% per day, this does not mean any of you could make 2% just by following the simple steps.

also....

tidbits you ask! how about this.....

discipline & positive thought.

something we have all read a 10000 times. it aint new. yet most chose not to practice it. instead, it is more fun, and seemingly more gratifying in the short term to take the piss out of eachother. in the long term, it is counterproductive (as profturf kept reminding us) and mostly unprofitable.

yours,

pissfest

So why do you come here to ET? You're not here to learn, nor to bestow knowledge to others. Just to stroke your ego perhaps?

Either way, its not important. I am fairly sure if I had traded when you did, when the markets and stocks actually had good intraday ranges, I would have made a fortune too. But what can I do, I'm here now and have to fight for pennies.

Quote from rubberbird:

like I said kid, you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

I need to learn how to take it? I've probably been on the receiving end of more garbage on ET than anyone. And I stand here today stronger than ever.

anyway kid, i'm only about 10 years older than you. But 10 very important years. I've already immortalized myself in the trading world, and have made a killing. So you go keep helping out on this board, and fishing for pennies.

Profturf is none other than the indomitable trading master Victor Niederhoffer himself. His website should be on the daily reading list of all traders.

As indicated in previous posts, I have knowledge of that horse's ass Niederhoffer from being a past customer of his fund. I am particularly interested in the results of funds and have access to daily returns reported on Bloomberg for a purchasable index of 7 of the biggest hedge funds as well as a subscriber to the ratings services that receive results on returns from all the independent accountants. I note some reasonable serial correlations in the daily results of the hedge funds cited above which I would be pleased to share if it seems of interest . I can also answer most questions of a reasoned nature about the various charges going back and forth since I follow them as a student and customer. Let me point out for starters that numerous news sources have reported that Refco had enough liquidity and profits and capital on their books to pay out some 2 billion in bonuses and dividends in 2004. to 4 lucky executives. I would hope that if I were the owner of a firm such as Refco, I could be associated with someone in 1997 who I had losses with that still allowed such a 2 billion payment. Please how could transactions with him in 1997 , and bookkeeping events after have been so heinous and still allow such a payout. The media such as Bloomberg that I read who apparently have an anonymous source close to the investigation report that the losses Refco suffered from their exposure to him were in the 35 million to 45 million range, but that they hid these on their books unbeknownst to the exchanges, accountants, and investors and Niederhoffer for 8 years. But that doesnt take account of assets turned over to them. Jon Markman's article on MoneyCentral A Hedge Fund Meltdown covers all the details, denials , and debts( or lack thereof ) in a very reasonable way although I think he may be a bit more favorable to the horse's asses role in it than might be hoped by some of his detractors and myself

What if we have a sidebar and discuss the best catfights/spats or battles between people aired out on ET... lol
If I remember correctly [and my search function says that I do] trainr and Thunderdog have provided me with some entertaining dogfights [pardon the pun]

As far as the whole "Why would anyone want to help others?" thing goes, maybe it's because many of the questions that they reply to are from beginners. Most of the traders on here were new to the market at some point in time, and when they were just starting out many of them didn't have an internet to go ask a question that a 20 year vet could answer in just a matter of minutes. I'm personally thankful that there are people on here, willing to share their personal insights in trading. Some of them have helped me greatly, others have simply entertained me, but either way I'm glad that ET is here and that I'm a member.

'A Great BIG Thanks' to everyone who chooses to share their valuable knowledge, and I suppose a little 'thank you' to the entertainers is in order as well.

Another thing to take into consideration is all the help people receive/give via PM's. Since we are not all privy to these, its worth noting that many people get some great insight that goes unknown to everyone on these boards. I, myself, have learned a lot about a number of topics from senior traders and have tried to help answer anyones questions who PM me as well.

After reading through thousands of posts, there are a number of different individuals that have contributed valuable information. Making sure you have an edge, keeping it simple, the money management discussions, just to name a few topics. If the information gets you to take a loss quicker, recognize a change in the winds of the market or realize that maybe trading is not for you, then it's all good.

So, rather than name one or two individuals, thanks to all.
