Today we are in a globally connected world with airlines and fast cars where pandemics spread quickly. We also have a much greater percentage of people who travel.
My father never left his home town until he joined the army in WW2 and then afterwards went to the university (which he had to go to late since the polio lockdown delayed the start of classes).
Good luck with your fantasy.
The Case Fatality Rate (CFR) in Sweden is among the highest of all nations and keeps increasing every day.
2,586 deaths / 21,092 cases = 12.2% fatality rate.

And so will everyone else if we / they reopen before we have a vaccine.
Its amazing to me that people don't seem to understand that.

My grandparents both worked for Pan Am. The world was pretty connected for them.
But... I have no problem with sealing the borders til this is over....
Lock down the borders and open up the country outside of a few densely packed cities and see what happens. 4 week test period to see if our hospitals get overwhelmed. See if our charts have worse ramps than the Swedens.
There is no science saying that we should wait to reopen. The virus is not going away.
Unleashing a novel pandemic on a society that takes no reasonable mitigation measures leads to the maximum number of deaths and the most disruption to the economy & society.
A society that takes reasonable mitigation measures includes lockdowns when the pandemic cases are increasing will endure fewer deaths and comparatively more moderate economic disruption in the long run. When U.S. states open up in stages, even before a vaccine, it is very different scenario than Sweden which is letting the pandemic run amok.
why are you arguing in such a bullshit manner?
no one is arguing against reasonable mitigation.
What I am saying is there is no reasons to lockdown low risk people while hospitals have capacity because there is no science showing it will improve their infection rate or end result.
High risk should be locked down.
That is massive mitigation.
you are arguing (implicitly) that locking down low risk groups is a superior strategy. yet all you can offer is straw men and scary stats that don't apply.
You have offered no facts or science...
Engage in the facts and science and I will return to respecting you.
Right now... you are a troll on this subject.
Most public health experts, medical experts, and statisticians totally disagree that only locking down the "high risk' people is a viable mitigation strategy. Allowing the majority of your society to go about spreading the disease across both low risk and high risk people leads to a disastrous end result for the society. Keep in mind that a good portion of your "low risk" people get seriously sick as well -- even if they don't die. This detracts from a recovery and increases fear.
Fortunately most states in the U.S. are following the strategy of a 60 day lockdown followed by a staged re-opening -- which is the best strategy.
