Of course, it is well established that you can drown a woman in your car and walk off and still be very popular with your base.
Or commit all sorts of acts like leaking classified information like Hillary Clinton and not even held accountable for it? What about financial dealings of Hillary Clinton and John Podesta with Russia? Unlike, Donald Trump, they actually got monies from the Russians and sold our uranium to boot! Paul Manafort was working as a lobbyist for the Podesta brothers and surprise, surprise that they are not even being investigated? Too many traitors in the intelligence services! On the plus side, there are more patriots and I am sure that at some point, something has to give! Patriots cannot allow the traitors to impeach a duly elected American President Donald Trump just because they lost the election and cannot accept it! Eventually, the guilty will be punished even if it has to take a long time to happen!
Do you even know the whole story? I'm guessing not. In any event, that tragedy ended any chance he might have had of becoming president. Whereas Trump openly declared that he could shoot someone and not lose votes. This after all the crazy shit he pulled and somehow got away with. This is the guy you're backing? On the plus side, you deserve each other.
Kennedy was precluded from becoming president but did not disappear into the dustbins of history. He remained one of the most popular and powerful dems in America.

And the fact that a person does not become elected does not mean they have lost support of their hard core base- it may mean they cannot pull anyone other than the base anymore- no party switchers or independents- and your post referred to the base standing by no matter what - which I agreed to. And I stand by the assertion that the fact that Teddy lost his chance to become president does not in any way mean he lost his base. They licked his bootheels to the end and he left this world as one of the most powerful people in America.
