Who can beat my Download speed?

Quote from Bob111:

bs...OP did hide all the info for a reason..i did run couple tests in this web site..results vary by as much as 80% and they depend on hosting server..another free shitty service...or could be a speed on network..dunno the details, but i've seen even higher reports from guys who trade from middle of siberia. based on data from same website, OP mentioned..

I spoke to OP a few weeks ago about colo in NYC. He's here somewhere and in a datacenter. I'm not sure what speeds he's paying for or what type of line he's on - Speedtest is about burst, not sustained and those odd #'s look like he's on a non-symmetrical line... but those numbers are legit, he just doesn't want us to know where his box is.

Unless you spend all nights long downloading high definition movies, it is not the raw speed but latency that matters... and even more so consistent latency,

When you request a Web-page it normally under 100kb including images and scripts. However, a typical Web-page contains 40 additional images, or other downloads.

Assuming a bizzare scenario that every image takes 40ms to load (which is ovewrly optimistic) but only when an image is loaded, it triggers loading the next image, we see that a simple web-page (like google search) takes over 1.5 seconds to load. The same happens to market data.

If you want snappy internet you need low latency. Raw speed is irrelevant unless you do file-sharing on a large scael.

Exactly latency. Denver to Chi is 56ms for me, that's acceptable, I don't tick scalp.

That's pretty quick!!!!!!!

I have a 300mbit line and each computer is throttled down to 100mbit so unless you want to see a speedtest that shows 100/100 i'll spare you.

Would love to know where you ended up!

EDIT: Why isn't it even? Is your DL speed always faster than your UL speed?

Also, try pingtest.net or, from the command prompt, Start, Run, cmd <enter> (or hold down the start menu/windows key + R key at the same time

From command prompt type "ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" (where x is your quote/execution server's IP addy)

Most people I know have never really sustained over 25mbits of bandwidth and on rare events (like May6th) have spiked to 45-50mbits down so you have plenty of bandwidth there - hopefully you have the latency to match

I don't know what your experience is with speedtest.net. I have found it to be very accurate and reliable.

I have a 50/50 symmetrical line and I get consistantly between 43 and 46 mbps up/down over and over and over.

I also have a 300mbit symmetrical (three bonded 100meg lines) but each port on my switch is throttled back to 100mbit and I get consistantly between 96 and 98 on speedtest up/down over and over and over.

Because of OP's odd numbers (odd being not in even increments of 100) I have to assume that his ISP is giving him a non-symmetrical line on a shared trunk. If he had a dedicated symmetrical circuit they are sold in increments of 100mbps and he would be putting up very close to what he is paying for.

Considering that he is probably not pulling or pushing more than 15-20mbps burst or sustained, anything over 100mbps is overkill for one server (but nice to have if you need a quick download).

The only other way to test what your sustained download/upload speeds are is to move large files. I move 3-5GB per day between machines with my home 50/50 being the slower connection and I always push/pull around 45mbps sustained for 3-5 minutes. I would assume that with the speeds OP posted he would be able to do considerably better.

U.S. Internet Speed Slows Compared To Other Countries: Report

Compare that to Hong Kong, where consumers can get 500Mbps for $25 a month, or Seoul, where the same speed is priced at $30 a month.

i told you that long time ago-telecom in US is ridiculously overpriced, compare to any other world country. wireless services -it just doesn't make any sense. in the rest of the world-you can connect any phone to any provider.not in US.long contracts, high prices...slow. you name it-US have it. so much for a "leader of free world"..
and now they about to merge 2 big one into a one even bigger.
wait until that comcast monster scream one day-too big to fail! nation's network will be at risk!
for f** sake-paying almost $400 A MONTH! for phone family plan, tv and internet i can't even change 5 years old box remote control for free. it's f** 15 bucks!

The real question here is how much do you pay for that speed ? I do have something like that in Gigabit Ethernet port, but it should be like Gigabit really and not half, you need SSD and better hardware. But some people from Eastern Europe can get that for $10 or so. Maybe $15 / month.
