Here's the thing - "banning mental illness" sounds good. We should hold people accountable for giving weapons to people who are acting funny. The problem is it opens up to interpretation of what mental illness is. We can definitively say someone is a felon. At least according to a jury. I take the more extreme position that even felons who've served their time should be rewarded their rights back because the worst should be locked up for life..

But mental illness, and the "science" of psychology has a crisis of reproducibility problem. Until we can certify someone as "incapable of owning a firearm" beyond a reason of a doubt there's no possible way you can implement such "common sense gun laws" without disenfranchising lawful gun owners who are considered "mentally ill" for whatever political reason a lobbyist decides. Keep in mind - we are only around 40 years past sterilizing people for being "insane". Reflecting on that it is surprising the amount of politics that go into determining someone is "unfit" for something based on their mental status. Hell, Great Britain chemically sterilized Alan Turing for being gay. Back then, gay was considered a "mental illness".

I'm saying this because the difference between banning something to feel good, and banning something because it's dangerous often doesn't come to down to facts but rather the political leanings of whoever is in power.

Until then, shall not be infringed. Robbing someone of the most primitive and important physical right, the right to self defense, should be taken as the most serious possible punishment for the most serious possible crimes. The kind of crimes where you're sent to prison forever and you have no rights.

Yes, I am aware of the strategies of "let's blame it on the person, not mental health" when the shooter doesn't fit the right wing pattern, and the "let's blame it on mental health but do nothing about it" when the mass shooter is a right wing nut job.
 
No one talks about violent black on white crime. Its MUCH more prevelant than white out black crime. For that scumbag to kill in innocent child, there needs to be protests !
