Chappelle quicky changed his tune.MM was defending the election deniers just a few months ago.

the "embrace Trump" was post election, a bit like Chappelle's "I'll give him a chance" SNL's comments. Of course Dave walked it back years later having given him a chance. MM is right about libs being condescending to cons, though I no longer give a damn about the condescension since cons have embraced fascism. I saw the comments and they were made in a different time/context than the "they're getting fed fake news" bit. Seems like he's hedging a hard centrist position, which makes political sense even if we know the viewpoints is kinda bullshit in this day and age (only people with similar viewpoints are completely ignorant politically).
McConaughey criticized those in the entertainment industry who are urging Trump supporters to passively give up on hope of overturning the election results.
McConaughey also attempted to compare the election denial of Trump’s supporters to the anguish felt by Democrats after Hillary Clinton lost the 2016 election.
“I’m sure you saw it in our industry when Trump was voted in four years ago, they were in denial that was real. Some of them were in absolute denial,” McConaughey told Brand.
However, in making his comparison, he left out the fact that Clinton quickly conceded her loss, unlike Trump. The “Dallas Buyers Club” star also didn’t mention that Clinton and her Democratic supporters didn’t press false claims of widespread election fraud for weeks or continue to mount questionable legal challenges to overturn election results in several states.
McConaughey acknowledged that the denial among Trump’s supporters may be because of the “fake news” they are being fed, although it’s unclear which outlets he considers to be “fake news.”

I'd have to see the context based on the interpretations the author's making below which reads slanted.

Sure he did, ignorance, excusing it, not enough time to cover the subject, I often don't do a full throated analysis of everything when discussing politics. This just reads like a wish list from the author. This could be ignorance on MM's part, tacit approval of abhorrent actions, or political hedging, I'd have to hear MM's interview to get context (time format for instance). Author does make a good point if this was a long interview

Does it matter where they're getting their fake news? Why is it on MM to go into detail about fake news outlets? Sounds like author wants him to name names for him to be a perfectly pure celebrity.
Listen, I think anyone but Abbott at this point, I'd rather see a Beto in there then a celebrity who at best is hedging on centrism because "texas" or worse is ignorant of the shit that he's trying to excuse. I do think making the call he's a Trumper based on the post election interview video I posted is a stretch though.
I may have seen this Gala statement which sounded like a joke on regretting his prior statement and not in the same serious tone of "giving him a chance" . I'm mostly going by his follow up SNL appearance I want to say maybe 2 yrs later though Dave could certainly have changed his mind years prior. I only follow his politics when he makes them public

Telling Trump supporters not to give up trying to overturn the election was the context.
Of course he is wrong.Hillary conceded in 2 or 3 days IIRC and never tried to overturned the election
