it takes an effort to figure out where the money should go, most non-profits are either ineffective or an outright scam, and it's unclear how to measure what "a good charity organization" is quantitatively.

My personal favorite.
I love dogs probably more than people. This charity does great things for both humans and dogs. And what I really like is that they don't hound you for more money all the time. They actually mail thank you messages and personal stories WITHOUT enclosing another donation card. Makes me feel as though I'm not getting fleeced.
