Trump has a terrible lack of people skills. A reply to Khan so easy to make (but only at the beginning of this), along the lines of, "you're right, sir, I have not made the sacrifices you have, and I respect yours to the utmost. My position on Muslims and Islamic fundamentalism has had to evolve, and I have changed accordingly. Please let me explain..."
But no, even elementary verbal judo is out of reach for this guy, much less a shred of empathy. The latter pops into his head later, an afterthought, not an emotion. Everyone is out to get him and he has to be strong, not give an inch. This is a man who has never had to work towards consensus anywhere, just dictate, "do it" or "you're fired".

I believe it was the OP that first claimed that the Trump candidacy was really to assure a Clinton presidency. Usually I dismiss CT as nonsense because they require more brains and coordination than our government can muster up. This time, however, given the continuous and relentless nonsense coming out of Trumps mouth, the latest being the Purple Heart deal which was handled poorly, and that's being kind, has me believing that this guy doesn't really want the job.
People will choose the safety of the status quo, even if it's a hack like Hillary. It comes down to a matter of trust, and at this point who the hell knows what a Trump presidency will bring. It's a roll of the dice, and I play enough craps to tell ya' the longshot bets typically don't end well for the guy rolling the dice.

I think Trump does want the job. However incapable he would be at it, I'm not sure he knows it yet, but it would feed his bottomless ego.
Keep in mind that Trump is doing what he does best: muddling through. His big start in real estate had less to do with the "million dollar loan" from dad and far more to do with the connections his father had that allowed the deal to be put together in the first place. Without his father's connections and credibility, Trump would have remained a chump. Beyond that, and apart from almost losing his entire net worth, he just traded on the Trump brand and rode the wave, often at the expense of stakeholders. And that's exactly what he's doing now. Think of the Peter Sellers movie, Being There, but without the innocence and charm.

The Trump you see at the podium is the real Trump. In another thread, you had adroitly described him as acting like a drunk at the end of the bar. But he's not acting. And he's not drunk. And it should give all thinking people pause.
