Whats going on with all these people ready to give up their rights?

It was not meant to be personal. Please correct if I misunderstand your entire point in this thread. I thought you made it clear that you rather see the economy get started asap over a few more infections and deaths. Sounds crude but was that not your point all along?

This is a random statement, devoid of any real content just to take a snarky shot at me. I hope you enjoyed it.

It not that simple. It not just money, it's an entire economy, all of society impacted for years to come. Tens, probably hundreds of millions destroyed financially. There is no stimulus package large enough to back stop what's coming. And nobody is even planning for or addressing the social unrest which is sure to come. Think Ferguson and Baltimore riots on steroids. Hundreds of thousands on the streets rioting. You think people who have lost it all with zero prospects of getting it back are going to roll over and play dead? By the time that scenario plays out the virus body count will seem trivial and pretending that isn't a real possibility is the height of irresponsibly.
They are boarding up shops on Rodeo Dr. and Michigan Ave. Stores like Pottery Barn think they are going to be looted. WTF?

This level of panic is what I didn't want to experience. My home state has 16 deaths in the whole state but is shutting down with talk of mandatory stay-home rules and no school until the fall. Its madness.

I saw an analysis today that suggested that 1/3 of Americans could wind up out of work. Its like a bad science fiction book.

my wife has been an avid skier and snow boarder her whole life.
she lived in denver for a while.
She has been to brianhead multiple times.

I got altitude sickness a few times 20 years ago at mammoth but never anywhere else and never since.
i never saw her impacted at altitude at all.

She has been to brian head multiple times including last year.. with no issues.
We had already been skiing pretty high up a few times this year.
Mammoth and big bear.

but.. I agree it could have been the flu plus altitude.

however, I can also tell you..

my daughter had it before brian head.
she and many of her class mates were out with flu like systems.
her friends and her cousins went to the hospital with the flu.
a few went more than once.

they all tested negative for the flu.

by the way... friends of hers had just been to china over christmas.
our thesis is her schools was exposed right after christmas.

just a working thesis... no guarantee.

Dude. Brian's Head is 9800 ft MSL.

Most people who are *visiting* that altitude are going to feel bad after about a week. My friends and family gather at a ski resort each year and the same ones get sick every year. Some get headaches but others get a bad cold. Its genetic. After years and years of it I know which ones to keep an eye on.

There used to be a facility on a mountaintop outside of Quito, Ecuador supporting the Deep Space Network and we would send people there... and they would drop dead. It kept happening for years until someone figured out it was altitude sickness. Then they required engineers to stay in Quito for 2 weeks before they went up to stay at the site and they stopped dying.

I used to be pretty unaffected by altitude. I've skied at 14,500 ft and had to climb up with gear the last 2000 feet. But now I feel it. In the winter I take a job at the local ski resort in exchange for a season pass and a locker and some other perks. Above 9000 I can literally feel shortness of breath, tightness in my chest and the need to stop occasionally.

Simple: don't run a business where you can't over years save enough to stay afloat for a few months. What a ridiculous notion. Do we need to bail out stupid business owners? What are we talking about? Someone running a business who can't make enough to put safety funds aside or does not believe they are needed should do something else. Simple as that. Show me a family run restaurant business that acted responsibly and will run out of resources in 3 or 4 months because the lock down lasts even longer and I will personally donate a significant enough sum to support their cause. I will tag the donation so you know it came from me (I always donate anonymously as matter of principle). Remind me and hold me to this in 3 or 4 months if you like or care. Those are the businesses we should support, nobody else. Let the rest sink, as soon as this is over new businesses that are better managed will emerge and hire millions of workers back. After all the American economy is unbreakable and fundamentally robust, correct?
Wrong Fucker! The booming economy has taken rents to astronomical heights. Plenty of great restaurants and bars, coffee spots.. etc had been going under prior to CV. Many Americans are entrepreneurs and would rather own their own biz then work for the man. Regulations up the ying-yang have also made it tougher so slow your roll.

But hey, we will have "flattened the curve" and prevented all those Americans who will die during the next flu from dying from this one (and a few others who probably wouldn't have died without these draconian measures).

You are correct. That is indeed my entire point. I believe we are severely overreacting because we lack knowledge and are panicking. Panic, by definition, removes logical thought.

Keep it non personal, will ya?

Sure every man has a free choice. Just don't socialize your losses because you want to be your own man.

I was sick in Jan/Feb with every symptom in the CV playbook. Went on for 2 weeks and have had many friends say the same thing. I was coughing and had chest and lung congestion like nobody’s biz, fever, shit sprays, you name it. So it’s been around. Had a friend who was in Vail in March he tested positive and another in Sun Valley Idaho.

Helps my business (see my personal account statements, posted, unfortunately one of the very few on this site) . Not that I wish for panic but whatever I do or consume, I always did so and do so with a healthy safety cushion to survive events like this. I find it irresponsible that the responsible ones need to bail out the ones that made a free choice to run their business in the way they themselves see fit. I support those who lack opportunities not bail those out who made deliberate choices against building up reserves for the inevitable bad times.

Hmm... Me too. Had exactly what you just described in early January. It was like flu+shits, I thought it was because I had gotten a flu shot.
