Whats going on with all these people ready to give up their rights?

Well I can only provide my personal perspective.

Germany is serving as a good example of the right way to pursue re-opening. Germany has used wide-scale testing and contact tracing to drive the effective R0 rate down towards 0.7; the intent is to have more people recovered each day than infected. In fact this is one of their key criteria for pursuing the "next stage" of re-opening.

Most medical experts have recommended that "stay at home" remain in place for 60 days before a staged re-opening is pursued with one of the entry criteria being that wide-scale testing and contact tracing is available.

I am fine with North Carolina keeping "stay at home" in place until the end of May then starting with a staged re-opening. Surveys from local media show that the majority of the population in North Carolina support this timeline.

I have not taken any money from the government; I do not qualify. All the members of my family are still employed at full salary.

From a rate of infection criteria; I would consider things safe as can be expected for start re-opening when the effective infection rate (R0) is driven to 0.7 by wide-scale testing and contact tracing. Following the example of Germany.

=====================

As a side note; I believe that the government providing $1200 to nearly all people including all of those who have not been impacted whatsoever financially is absurd. It is costing the U.S. approx $250 Billion.

We should have put this money into supporting people who are unemployed or have reduced pay/hours due to COVID-19. These are the people who need the financial support to pay their bills. I know we added $600 weekly etc. We should consider an approach to similar countries where we provide the unemployed with 80% or more of their salaries until they have jobs again when we "open for business".
You're thinking this through far too carefully. You do realize, of course, that this is the Politics forum, right?

Blocking the road and preventing traffic is illegal, agreed. Protesting on the road isn't.

All I said was that Kap's protest wasn't a 1A issue as you mentioned. If you didn't mean it that way, then it was a misunderstanding.

I think we are on the same page more or less...

I think the main takeaway from all that's going on is that we all need to go the distance to come out okay on the other side, whatever the hardship may be between now and then. How long? I don't think we get to dictate terms to the virus. I think it's the other way around.

In the meantime, we'd all do well to suck it up and hunker down.

The other side of suck it up and hunker down is to suck it up, stand up and fight knowing there will be casualties. Right now we're pinned down trying to assess the situation and taking casualties in the process. There does come a point that if you let the enemy dictate your every move your forces are so weakened that you cannot mount an effective assault anymore. That's a catastrophe. When we arrive at that point is the 64 dollar question and several million lives are on the line. Time is not on our side. Tough decisions to be made for sure

You realize, of course, that this is a virus we're talking about, right? An enemy against which not even Trump can obfuscate or dictate terms to. One that is about 3 times more contagious and several times more deadly than a flu, apparently presenting its hosts with all kinds of different symptoms that have not even been considered before, and quite different than those normally associated with a "flu-like" virus. This is just now coming to light. Beginning to understand the adversary is hardly the time to be taking a victory lap like Georgia is about to do tomorrow.

Enemy none the less and at some point we must decide what is an acceptable loss of life and move on. Real victory over this is only achieved through herd immunity and that means taking some casualties along the way. There will be a spike in rate of infection and deaths whenever we roll out of our restrictions, that's a given. At some point we must move forward, cautiously for sure, but moving none the less. I wish the state of Georgia success, but admittedly would not to be the first lab rat to schedule a hair cut, massage and then go bowl a few frames.

So, you mean like “death panels?” Remember those? Remember when Obama’s haters were outraged by their own fabricated and ridiculous claims of such atrocities that they expected to be perpetrated by the Obama administration? Is that what YOU are now proposing?

Yes, and I never had a problem with said death panels and wrote as much. Someone has to make the tough decisions or we all go down with the ship. I ain't saying it's pretty, just necessary
