imo-it's oranges to apples. Mazda is front wheel drive and BMW is rear.
i was thinking about buying either 3 or 6 for everyday use and abuse,but after reading their forums and talking to my friends who are in car business decided not to. i use to work in the garage 15 years ago or so and there is always at least one on the lift with bad a\t. looks like they still have same problem. their automatic tranny suck. this is probably why they cost less(used) than any other brand of same class and mileage. even less than Hyundai or kia
 
That was 15 years ago. Quality change. Companies change. I suggest updating your info on the auto industry. Mazda has been getting many awards lately.

i know. it's like top car in consumer report and all that. but like i said-prices of 2-3 years old mazda 3 or 6 is speaking for itself.
i'm not talking about yahoo auto,i'm talking about prices from closed dealer's auctions and massive volumes. it's looks undervalued,compared to other brands(the reason i was looking to buy and i really like the design of 6 inside and out(which is really really rare). but like i said-after some research(including mazda forums) i decide to stay away from it. for one reason only-automatic transmission. no problems or complains (including my next door neighbor) from user with manual tranny. their AT is just keeps overheating. people are changing trannys at 5-10-15K miles! i can install additional radiator and all that,but seriously...buy a basicaly brand new car and you have to modify it to make it work and last longer? common..it's 2013,not USSR 1975.
on top of that- i have to add that the parts are usually more expensive for those fairly small production Japanese brands-mazda,subary,suzuki etc. if you want cheap and low cost-you better stick with trully mass production-toyota,nissan,honda. just something to keep in mind.

what about it? like i said-go to a used car dealer(if you have a friend,who has the access to data) and see the current auctions prices yourself. compare. ask yourself why 2 years old great looking mazda 6 is cheaper by 20-30% than hyndai sonata or ugly toyota camry. WHY? i don't think that the used car markets are inefficient. you have to see the auctions like manheim(not far away from me),where they are selling 10K+ cars a DAY

It's probably consumer's perspective of value. The same reason why
Apple's products are overpriced despite their product being mediocre at best. Good marketing. Do you really think consumer as a whole are rational and knowledgeable about the things they buy?

Mazda for one hasn't advertised as heavily as Hyundai, Toyota, or Honda in the past.
 
Are you serious? Annedotal testimonies are good in the right situations in that they can alert you to issues that you may not be aware of. But the problem with them is that they are hard to quantify.

What % are having that problem tells you a lot more useful information.

I can do the same $hit with BMW or any other car brand.

as i said in this thread-according to consumer report BMW reliability is one notch above famous land rover range rover.

how often you find posts,where people are complaining about transmissions on a brand new car? turns out-it's a pretty common complain on mazda forum. few months ago i bought a brand new bike that been produced for 1-2 years (all new-brand new,different engine,frame and other components)and for all this time there is no single complain about it. none. probably because it's a honda.
