What We Can Learn From Liberals

Quote from jeafl:

How so? If I say your faith is wrong, that it is false, do you not think I am being disrespectful of your faith?
No. if you simply had said that you disagreed with me, that would have been fine. But this is what you actually said
Quote from jeafl:

On the contrary. You have no power to compel me to respect your belief or anything else that is yours. My respect has to be earned; it is not something I give.
And this is what's wrong with the so-called conservative Christians. They don't simply disagree with other sects of Christians or nonChristians. Their contempt for other people's faiths is best described by (for lack of a better word) hate.

Quote from ZZZzzzzzzz:

Hapless, the defender of Ann Coulter, and George Bush apologist...talk about slurs!!!

LOL...

It is so classic, the full on self identification with the right wing idols by the right wing zealous idol worshipers, that they begin to personally attack the person who is making fun of their idols.

LMAO...

Hapless, president of Ann Coulter fan club, and vide president of George Bush fan club...
Zzzzz, frustrated at his ceaseless lusting for Ann Coulter.

What an idiot.

And how has my refusal to grant respect as a matter of course been disrespectful? What specific act of disrespect have I engaged in by insisting that you have no automatic right to my respect?

Don't we have short memories?

The basis of a civil discussion is mutual respect for both sides' points of view, even when disagreeing. You insisted a narrow definition of Christianity that covers about 1/3 of total Christians according to my definition. Thus our disagreement whether a Christian can be a liberal was just a matter of difference in definition. I said I respect your definition and asked that you respect mine and so at the end we could both be right. Then you gave me this not granting me respect thing.

That attitude, in a discussion like this, is disrespectful.

Wrong. My freedom of religion and my freedom of speech mean that I can express my opinion and show as much contempt for beliefs I do not accept as I want. You are not entitled to my respect in any way whatsoever.
