trading the NQ, largest vol spike is 645. then all of the sudden 2,000 go out in 30 seconds, then another 1800 and another 1,000. wtf?

Unfortunately, despite all the preparation one makes, we cannot know when random news will be released and how it will affect the market. Sometimes you just get unlucky. Of course you could have been short and gotten lucky. I think it all evens out in the end as far as these events are concerened.
