Liberals don't typically support the poor. They want you to.

Lol, one of the better jokes I've heard was about a guy, "Jim" (conservative) that accepted a dinner invitation by a very liberal family. The dinner conversation that night ran the usual gambit of social issues and after some time the couples 8 year old daughter "Sally" spoke up.

"I can't wait to grow up and get a job"

"Why Sally" Jim asked.

So I use my money to help someone needy" Sally responded.

You don't have to wait to grow up, Jim replied. Come over to my house this weekend we are paining the fence, I'll hire you to help me and when we are done we can go down to the corner convenience store and you can give your money to one of the needy guys down there without a job asking for money.

Sally thought for a moment and asked, "Why don't you just ask those guys to paint your fence and give the money to them?

If the Government is so efficient why does private charity even exist? Your mixing entitlement with charity, The Government would do better spending it's money getting people off the tit, building their lives demanding they learn a trade and let local charity take care of the needy.

Where I live almost all the local churches combine to supply a local food and clothing bank, next town over a large Baptist church operates a free medical clinic, comparable to any doctors office in the city, x-ray, diagnostic, etc.. Local churches partner with the YMCA to provide after-hours child services for the school district. My Church has a large life-center (gymnasium and kitchen) which is opened and used by the local authorities (staffed by volunteers) whenever there's an emergency or natural disaster in the area.

Churches are subsidized by tax dollars. Why wouldn't that be considered part of government inefficiency too.

How are churches subsidized by tax dollars, everything I mentioned came about by private donation? Churches are non-profit, in fact the costs in some of the services given, specially those in conjunction with or in support of local government are donated with government being the recipient ... people just pitch in when it's needed.

I'm guessing he's going to say that since they have "Not-For-Profit" status, they get tax breaks. Apparently, to some, that is the same as being subsidized by the government.

What Not For Profit? Don't make me laugh .
Charitable works are stock in trade for many churches which in total are then able to put billions into properties and expenses for ministers, pastors and members to derive benefit from.

The inefficiency of govt to run that estimated $71 billion per year tax exemption scheme for so called non profit churches, is going to be no less inefficient than the entitlement scheme it runs for the poor.

As for the thread title, politically I'm no Liberal but the answer would be due of the enormous volumes of bullshite you far too far to the right Conservatives come up with.

We should get rid of most of non-profit tax status for religious and political organizations. Limit the IRS charity deductions to the ones who actually give the vast majority of the proceeds to charity, not parking lots or bigger churches or managers (preachers & minister's) cars and homes and PAC donations would not be a tax deduction, that one's a no brainer. I think most would agree that would be a good step to simplify the tax code.
