House Democrats rebuffed a dramatic personal appeal from President Obama on Friday, torpedoing his ambitious push to expand his trade negotiating power — and, quite likely, his chance to secure a legacy-defining trade accord spanning the Pacific Ocean.

In a remarkable rejection of a president they have resolutely backed, House Democrats voted to kill assistance to workers displaced by global trade, a program their party created and has stood by for four decades. By doing so, they brought down legislation granting the president trade promotion authority — the power to negotiate trade deals that cannot be amended or filibustered by Congress — before it could even come to a final vote.

“We want a better deal for America’s workers,” said Representative Nancy Pelosi of California, the House minority leader who has guided the president’s agenda for two terms and was personally lobbied by Mr. Obama until the last minute.

And yet not new. If you recall the words of the Durants which you posted earlier, this situation is the inevitable result of freedom: the strong, the clever, the fortunate, the gifted, with enough time pull far ahead of the many who are less so, and start modifying the environment to protect themselves. This process comes from Nature herself, don't you think? If we do not intervene (is that natural?) then that's what we should accept.

I couldn't agree more. They sold us out on stopping obamacare, they sold us out on amnesty and immigration. Now they are selling us out again. And for what? To please a bunch of silicon valley billionaires and entertainment industry big shots who give all their money to democrats.

I'll say this for liberals. They may be idiots but they stand up for their principles. Boehner, McConnell and that crowd are happy to bend over for Obama and be his bitch.

the secret is the bankers, hollywood and the fortune 500 cronies... purchase both dems and repubs and make them dance and bark depending on the issues and the timing.

for instance wall street guys are taught to give a percentage of their bonuses to politicians and some are to expected to get into politics upon early retirement.
It is a brilliant strategy.. those who are connected to the fed and its money spigot are then expected to perpetuate the control of the govt and therefore the people... via a percentage of the cronies excess money earnings.

You can even see how rock stars like Bono all of sudden become more "capitalist" (read pro crony) after they set up their own investment funds and make 400 million off a facebook investment.

That type of money and access has a quid pro quo from the owners of the Fed.

yes... and if we had followed the structure the founders put in place we could have done battle longer.

The privately owned Fed Reserve, senators being elected by the people instead of the state legislatures and national income taxes and the code and the power to prevent the rise of new competitors ... were the beginning of the demise.
