What Moves a Market?

Quote from Swan Noir:

He does move markets.

leaving the dream,baby

no one moves the market it just flows in its predefined order.if he moved the market there wouldn`t be no article.

Of course people move markets in the shortest of time frames. Baldwin, at one time, could move a market just by walking on to the floor if there was a perception that he favored a side.

Please don't buy into this mythical nonsense that markets are some sort of supernatural force. The reality is over the long haul no one can stand in the way of reality. But in the short term markets can be pushed. The FED can and does push for years where a guy like Baldwin may only get the ball rolling for five minutes (or less) to change that 4500 tick loss to a profit. Am I saying he can do it anytime he wants? Of course not but there are times when conditions permit it and times where they don't.

lol ... I'm sure the fact that you're happy he's made a billion dollars trading bond futures would please him to no end. And now I'm happy to eat some dinner.

Quote from Rorschach_test:

i`m very happy for him

to push it short term may mean a few ticks in Bonds.900 lot is not even a level value on the DOM ladder in Bonds.Supernatural power may mean the FED though, who owns the market.sure Baldwin and alike can ''push'' it a bit to get out,and the FED usually closes its eye on it.

Etfarb, as one hobyist, home gamer to another who makes their living in another manner (my apologies if i am wrong about that), I picked up and put down Soros's Alchemy of Finance 30 years ago and i wish that i did not. I can read it now(barely).
Get the book and sit down with google and Wikepedia and work and learn.
Then, on a daily basis watch stocks, currencies, bonds, rates, commodities worlwide.
Whether all that hard work will result in making money trading /investing is another matter.

Look at some of the guys around here....Mav, Cutten, Daal, Martin as others have said.
There is simply no way it can be reduced to what you ask in this thread. Incidentally,
I kown nothing.

Quote from etfarb:

The majority of people in the markets are looking for a magic bullet/indicator to tell them when to buy or sell but thats nothing more than a waste of time.

I want to start a thread pertaining to what moves a market (Stocks/bonds/FX/Commodities/Rates)

The simple answer is Supply Vs Demand and that applies to all markets

Index's go up and down according to people buying or selling companies

Commodities, prices go up according to how much supply there is and how much demand there is

For each asset class I want your opinion on what moves it and what it may affect directly

If your looking to make a currency trade with the outlook of a day to a week, what is forcing that currency to move up or down in value?

For every conceivable good reason people think the market should move by using supply/demand, gov't reports, new products or faulty products, it is all a pipedream. There is no good or bad reason why markets move, let's face it, they often move because many (inexperienced) based on emotions, they fear missing out on a move. How many times good news comes out and stock takes a nosedrive, it is so funny to watch, how many times a company misses earnings by such a small amount and opens twenty bucks down, stops are hit forcing market to decline further, and too often market after a month is roaring back, just minus all the weak hands.

Just comes down to experience, commodities are the same, some will trade them based on supply/demand, I think that is pointless as it is usually factored into price already.

I just want to Tailcoat wherever the market wants to go based on longer term trend.

Hope all have a Safe and Happy Thanksgiving
