What Made America Great?

Quote from nutmeg:

Nixon got us out of Viet Nam. He's a good guy.

He also took the $USD off of the gold standard... a bigger evil than any positive thing he did elsewhere.

Nixon got throwed out of the White House before we got out of Vietnam.

Nixon played the political game in Vietnam and was responsible for untold thousands of deaths on both sides in the Vietnam fiasco.

Yes and no. The last combat troops were withdrawn during March of 73, leaving a handful of advisers and Embassy personnel until the final collapse which took place on 4/29/75. Nixon was gone in 74.
He did handle the war poorly, but was left with a cluster Fck from LBJ. Comrade Cronkite sealed the deal with his mis-information campaign, the war weary country bought it and the war became un-winable after that. While one could argue that all lives lost were wasted, the tens of thousands that died after 69 were really wasted.

you're missing my point. We can disagree about the 'job they are doing' and 'what would be better' but I swear to God we're like a bunch of little kids...each of us pretending we have all the answers and anyone who disagrees is 'an idiot' or the 'enemy'.

How freakin hard is it to see just take a step back for a second....see a different perspective....and realize they are not the enemy or bad people (for the most part).

Don't you guys have friends and family that disagree politically? What, you can't hang out with them and treat them with respect because they they'd rather spend money on health care than education (for example)?

We can debate and fight tooth and nail, but at the end of the day we are on the same team. And the more we (you) continue to stoop to these childish levels the less productive those debates will be.
That's all well and good and there is a lot of truth in what you just said. But that doesn't change the fact that the left/unions/feds have fucked up our education system beyond all recognition. THAT was my point.

What a bunch of fricken non-sense.

In every leftist revolution and subsequent liquidation program it was the friends neighbors and sometimes families (not some foreign invader) that sent victims to the soviet gulag, nazi concentration camp, north korean & chinese reeducation camps.

No answers from the left, eh? What made America great? Not even the usual bilge of stealing land from Indians, enslaving blacks, not letting women vote, taking money from the poor, stealing oil from Iraq, etc?

Not even an attempt, feeble and obviously wrong as it might be?

I always like the one about "The rich got rich by taking money from the poor".

The hard truth is that America was never as "great" as some would claim, but once upon a time it did offer opportunity for almost anyone who was willing to make some sacrifices. Those opportunities have become more and more scarce as government tries to enforce it's will where it has no business, and, AND, corporate titans doing whatever they can to crush the little guy by funding the political process they claim to hate. The "feud" between corporate America and government is actually a ruse which has worked quite well for both government and corporations. Not worth a shit for the average Joe, but then the average Joe never really was anything more than a tool in the toolbox, a means to an end.
