Quote from Ash1972:
In his book Status Anxiety, Alain de Botton points out that there are two main types of love: interpersonal love (romantic, affectionate, for children etc.) and love "from the world" - otherwise known as status, which is a form of love from those who don't know you based on your position, power, money and abilities.
Interestingly, both types matter to humans, although it has long been fashionable to decry status as superficial. Economic and social status does have a real effect on happiness.
You have made an interesting point. I think for certain personality types, status is a powerful motivator, addictive even. This is not based on any studies I've read, just my interaction with an assortment of people and observing how they revelled in their status and the trappings, or were quite indifferent and were just themselves.
