What is trading to you?

I once knew a super wealthy retail commodity traders in New York City. He used some obscure and virtually impossible-to-understand Gann trading system to make truckloads of money every year, rain or shine.

One day, after a few beers in his Park Avenue penthouse, around 2 AM, he told me, in the most mysterious way : "You know, I do not trade to make money, it is not my ultimate goal, and it shouldn't be yours either...", and then he went to sleep after saying good bye.

He passed away a few months later, lung cancer.

I will never know the meaning of his conversation, and to this day, it still haunts me.
It is obvious that focusing solely on money (greed) or playing with scarred money is the killer in trading.

I'm so super unique, always digging around unlikely places for new ideas.

For me, it changes over time. When I started in 2008, I naively believed that it would be just a walk in the park for me. I am alright with programming skill and how difficult can it be ? I was just tired of the corporate world where I need to be extra careful not to step on someone's tail that could bite me. More than a decade later, I realise that the market is a beast that is difficult to handle. Plenty of traps. If not patient and careful, it will cost us dearly. If it's that easy, why bother getting a job.
