What is Swing Trading?

One definition is:

Type of trading attempted by a failed day trader before a final blow out.

Which mirrors the definition of a day trading:

Type of trading attempted by a failed swing trader before a final blow out.

Quote from Aisone:

I hear "Swing Trading" referenced quite a bit and am curious what this means to people that use it. For those into swing trading, here are a few questions:

1) What does "Swing Trading" mean to you?

2) What time frames do you use (ie monthly, daily, hourly, minutes, ticks etc)

3) How much historical data (how far back) are you analyzing for making your entry decisions?

4) How long are your hold times?

Thanks for sharing your perspective and insights.

Personally, I divide trading into two timeframes. Intraday trades, and swing trades.

Swing trade in my own terminology is anything I hold overnight, doesn't matter if it is a two day trade or a six months trade. The length of the trade is determined by market conditions.
