What is happening to men?

The truth lies somewhere in between nature and nurture, and the crime is that schools and teachers don't have the technique or methods (patience ?) to encourage the creativity that we are all born with, but is squelched by years of rote learning.

This has been the object of my thoughts for some time, kids and creativity or talents. Here's a few personal examples I know of.

A young man, fastest runner in 6th grade. The mother keeps him home from school to help with the younger kids, he never even finished 11th grade.

A 9th grade girl, talented artist. Mother sends her to an inner city school (there were resources for alternatives,mom said no) everyday events in that school overided any chances of developing her skills. She quit school, works for fast food has a kid.

Next up is a wonderful creative HS girl, photography fashion etc, she got in the way of herself, quit school.

There are other examples but I think, what does it take to develope even an average kid? Every kid has some natural abiltity ot talent, sometimes they see it and push it aside but I suppose it may just be destiny for some to move to the front of the pack.

Kids are discouraged by asking the wrong people for support perhaps?

I read a word of wisdom: "If you want to get to OZ ask someone who has been there".

Is it the water? In all seriousness, all the exporting/outsourcing of industrial type jobs is probably the cause.

Actually, it is in the water. The birth rate is veering towards more females being born because of the excessive hormones being distributed to the ground water... feed and fertilizers; meat hormones and yes... birth control pills consumed by women.

Did Einstein devote the rest of his life to creating dour, pessimistic quotes after discovering relativity? It seems there is no limit not just to the universe and people's stupidity, but also Einstein quotes.

women gravitate toward professions that require degrees, such as accounting, finance, teaching and nursing. they won't or can't get into fields that don't require a bachelors, like furniture moving, coal mining, automotive tech, appliance repair, fire fighting, roofing, etc.

women prefer intellectual professions and cushy, safe office jobs. how many women want to be coal miners and roofers? those are dangerous and undesirable jobs but only require a HS diploma (they pay well too)
 
modern cubicle papershuffling jobs are about as intellectual as gathering nuts and berrys. Big government and regulation are effectively make work programs for women and non-asian minorities.

It used to be you could try to be an athlete and if you failed, you could go and get a job in manufacturing or whatever. You better have a plan b from day one today. It is mostly our failure as parents as to why there are so many men in prison. We need to rethink our society.

Schools went through a transition and are totally built around the way girls are. Boys are at an incredible disadvantage in public schools. It is truly sickening. Still if you bring this up now, some woman will start shouting at you that boys have all the advantages in school. They fail to look at the figures for honors, graduation, dropout and college all of which heavily favor girls. The bottom line is it is socially acceptable to discriminate against boys. Boys learn differently than girls and it is a girl’s world in schools.

Its always fun seeing someone with an older daughter or daughters go through school and then have their son go through the exact same school with the same teachers. As one of my friends put it, he has had more trouble with the school for his one son than his did for all four of his older daughters.

If I were you, I’d be a bit worried about burn out but you know you child best. I grew up and still live in an over achieving and very competitive neighborhood. I can’t tell you how many of the stars just burnt out with drugs, alcohol or mental illness issues later.

I'd like to add a thought to that. I apologize for going off topic but Nitro has a heavy duty list there.

Kids have stress, real or imagined. We as adults have many ways to relieve stress, go for a ride, drink beer, etc. Kids have limited ways to relieve stress. They can listen to music, watch tv, video games or talk to friends. Very often these are the very things we ground them from. Now what is their stress releif? Things can go downhill from there.
