What is E-mini?

I am new and very curious about e-mini! What is it and how it works? What are the merits/demerits with emini? Is it a stock option or like any other ordinary stock? Looking at some trading journals in this forum, it appears that one point up or down of emini value is equivalent to a gain or loss of $20. Is that right? Can you short emini at downtick? Where can I get additional information about emini? Thanks in advance.

and read all you can, then check out the futures section on this site, and then if you need more info - fire away.
I started looking at this stuff about a month ago, and reading up on this site and cme, you really learn a lot. Learn a lot before you start trading this thing!!!
