What is "after-hours trading"?

For stocks, whilst there might be lots of excitement involved in after-hours trading, mostly liquidity is terrible during this time.

Futures are a different beast.

after hours is also pre-market..or before hours trading? especially during earnings season you will see money being made AFTER HOURS and BEFORE HOURS or PRE-market

I see countless reports about after-hours trading in stocks. What does that mean exactly, and who is allowed to and is trading them, when the "market" the exchange, is closed?

After 3:00, Central Standard time;
lower volume.Maybe once a year, may see something helpful, besides a 2 cent move or ''unchanged'' do pick up a penny on the street, near , but not on Wall Street.

Something I’ve never looked into is why liquidity is low. Is it because designated market makers can’t trade, they don’t want to trade? Because of the amount of participants in closing auctions shutting it down after?

I’ve never spent any real time searching but trying to find any legit information on an exchanges website is not easy.

The liquidity is low because people want to have a life and take a break from the markets.
