What is a good free antivirus programme

Now that AVG is no longer free, has anyone got some good ideas for another free anti virus?

An IT expert told me to use Avira. However, just read there's problems with Avira.

Avira supposedly has good detection rate but has quite a few problems such as Avira's lack of email scanning, erratic updates, nag screen issue and the active guard icon disappearing

Has anyone compared Avast with Avira before and which is better? Thanks

AVG is still free. You just have to replace your old v7.1 with v7.5.
