What influences short availability?

Hi, I wonder how I can maximize the likelihood of my short orders filling. Does this depend on the clearer or the broker/prop trading firm? Any firm you would recommend? (I trade NYSE and NSDQ open crossing at the moment, but the question is more general).

Yes, it depends on the broker and/or clearing firm.
Retail: Centerpoint is very good. Also Interactive Brokers.

Prop: a prop firm that clears through Merrill or GS should have most availability except small issues.
